New Bill Proposal Puts Connecticut on Its Way to Ban Greyhound Racing

New Bill Proposal Puts Connecticut on Its Way to Ban Greyhound Racing

Bill 5042 was proposed by 105th district representative Nicole Klarides-Ditria, 91st district representative Michael D’Agostino, and 18th district senator Heather Somers.

Bill 5042 Is Not the First Attempt to Ban Greyhound Racing in Connecticut

Bill 5042 proposes a full prohibition on the operation of any greyhound racing tracks in the state of Connecticut. Furthermore, it introduces a ban on any simulcasting of greyhound racing events that are taking place outside of the state.

However, this is not the first time such legislative changes have been proposed.  A similar bill was approved by the Senate in 2017 but it did not go through the House of Representatives so it was eventually scrapped.

In 2021, there was another attempt to ban greyhound racing in the state but the House of Representatives voted against the bill proposal. Then, in February 2022, Republican State Representative Nicole Klarides-Ditria proposed a very similar bill with number 5174 but it never really go through the whole approval process.

Greyhound Racing Is Deemed Inhumane and Cruel

The difference between the bill from February and the current bill proposal is that the previous one only introduced a ban on the operation of greyhound tracks but did not present any rules around simulcasting. The latest bill wants to eradicate not only greyhound racing tracks in the state but also thwart any live broadcast of such races in connection with sports betting activities. This will probably mean that the legislative changes will have an effect on sports wagering on greyhound races altogether with most operators eventually choosing not to offer such wagers.

Both the bill from February and the current bill, however, point to the fact that 41 other US states have already made greyhound racing illegal. The two bill proposals also highlight that the dogs participating in such races are often treated in inhumane ways and are subject to abuse and injuries. The use of live bait is also underlined as cruel.

Greyhound Racing Has Been Declining for a Long Time

There are no greyhound race tracks left in Connecticut. This form of entertainment was very popular in the past with Connecticut’s first track – Plainfield Greyhound Park – opening in 1976. However, by 2005 all live greyhound races had been discontinued as attendance was very low and its glory days were practically over.

Yet, according to legislation, opening a greyhound race track is still possible in Connecticut. With the latest bill proposal 5042, lawmakers are trying to reflect these historical developments and make it impossible for this cruel form of entertainment to have a comeback in Connecticut.

Saskatchewan Opens Up Casinos

Casinos in Saskatchewan were shut down in December 2020 due to COVID restrictions. The initial plan was to reopen in January 2021, but that didn’t happen. This had a detrimental effect on the economy, forcing some businesses to close and, consequently, having many people lose their jobs. Luckily enough, the expected news ‘Saskatchewan opens up casinos’ arrived in June 2021.

Progressively, from June until September 2021, SK casinos started reopening, but with certain limitations. They began with a 15% capacity limit and carried out strict safety programs. Not only employers but also employees suffered the consequences of the COVID restrictions, many of whom were part of the First Nation communities across the province.

The Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations created the Saskatchewan Indian Gaming Authority (SIGA) in 1995, authorized by the First Nations Gaming Act. Zane Hansen, current chief of SIGA (Saskatchewan Indian Gaming Authority), said COVID-19 restrictions were notoriously harsh on associations like his. Although SIGA’s casinos reported a major profit in 2018 and 2019, the recent losses made Hansen focus on reopening the casinos asap.

Slot Machines

Nowadays, SIGA is still recovering from the COVID crisis. Unfortunately, the ones who probably took the worst part were its employees. On the other hand, the best SK online casinos were operational during the pandemic and could be played by gamblers who could not make it to the physical casinos.

When Will Casinos Open in Saskatchewan – SIGA Must Be Heard

This extract is dedicated to the non-profit organization SIGA, the most prominent association that creates employment for First Nation people. The employees belonging to the several Native American tribes had to be heard when they asked: ‘When will casinos open in Saskatchewan?’, considering that 100% of the casino’s net income goes to these communities.

Tent in Forest

Nobody had the answer to the question: ‘When will casinos reopen in Saskatchewan?’. Nevertheless, thanks to SIGA’s president Zane Hansen, who worked from minute one to find answers to an unprecedented worldwide crisis, the whole reopening process was sped up. Now, most employees are back to their working positions, and their families can continue their normal lives.

Despite what we have just mentioned, SIGA must still develop economically to keep growing as it was before the pandemic. Let’s have a better insight into how SIGA casinos work. To start with, First Nations and Tribal Council partners become the landlords for the land and the facility on which the casino is located.

Hand Shake

Then, SIGA enters into facility and land lease agreements that become long-term profit arrangements for both, the First Nations and the Tribal Councils. SIGA provides top-of-the-line entertainment across six Saskatchewan casinos which offer slots, live and electronic table games, live events, and restoration services. Have a look at them below:

  • Painted Hand Casino in Yorkton.
  • Northern Lights Casino in Prince Albert.
  • Living Sky Casino and Sky Centre in Swift Current.
  • Gold Eagle Casino in North Battleford.
  • Bear Claw Casino and Hotel in Carlyle.
  • Dakota Dunes Casino in Saskatoon.

SIGA’s employees provide top-notch customer service that comes from traditional hospitality. Different but probably equally competent customer service is what you will find on the best online casinos in Canada. To conclude, but no less important, SIGA has made a commitment to promote responsible gambling to minimize potential harm.

SaskGaming – Government Corporation

SaskGaming is a crown corporation established in 1996 and owned by the government of Saskatchewan. It is the owner of two casinos in the province, the casino in Regina, and the casino in Moose Jaw. It is regulated by the Saskatchewan Liquor and Gaming Authority (SLGA). SaskGaming welcomes millions of visitors at its casinos every year and it employs a diverse workforce.

Values

Such has been SaskGaming’s activity that in 2008 it was named one of the best 100 Canada’s employers. In April 2023, the corporation will be transferred to the new organisation Lotteries and Gaming Saskatchewan (LGS). No need to mention that SaskGaming promotes responsible gambling, and it generates economic benefits for the community.

SaskGaming pays 50% of its income to support the government’s commitment to the First Nations. The corporation also provides payments to its shareholder, the Crown Investments corporation. The corporation has diverse backgrounds, it carries out its commitments with passion and looks for new ways to constantly improve its skills, knowledge, and products.

Native Americans

If you are a gambler travelling around Canada, you must know that there are many First Nation casinos in Canada which are worth a visit. In the US there are also casinos run by Native Americans, which share some similarities with the Canadian ones. All the First Nation casinos are unique and deliver an unforgettable experience upon every visit.

Saskatchewan Casinos

As we have previously mentioned in the two extracts above, Saskatchewan counts on eight operative casinos. There are six establishments which are owned by Saskatchewan First Nations, and two by the SaskGaming crown corporation. We have taken some time to gather some key information about these casinos in the table below:

🐻 Bear Claw Casino and Hotel It’s in Carlyle and has over 135 games on the gaming playground and top-notch resort facilities.
✋ Painted Hand Casino This casino is in Yorkton, and it has over 230 games that include slots and table games. It also has one restaurant.
🀃 Northern Lights Casino This establishment is in Prince Albert and has over 600 games, incredible restaurants and a lounge area.
🎰 Dakota Dunes Casino The Dakota Dunes Casino is situated near Saskatoon and features 620 slot machines, 18 table games, a shows venue with up to 570 capacity and a banquet area with 450 seats.
🌆 Living Sky Casino & Sky Centre Located in Swift Current, it hosts over 200 slots which include some top progressive jackpots. However, there’re no traditional table games. It also has rooms to accommodate its guests and a banquet area with a live stage in it.
🦅 Gold Eagle Casino It’s in North Battleford and you can enjoy 335 slot machines, 3 blackjack tables, roulette, and poker. It also has 3 delicious restaurant options.
🏢 Casino Moose Jaw This governmental casino has over 200 games in its gaming area, a restaurant and a bar.
🏨 Casino Regina This other governmental casino has over 800 slots, several table games, a restaurant, a bar, and a lounge area where to celebrate events.

The establishments above are top-of-the-line casinos that are worth a visit if you ever travel to the province of Saskatchewan. If you’re interested in gambling, by visiting one or more of these casinos you won’t only have an enjoyable time, but you’ll also help the Saskatchewan communities and the province’s economy. Remember to play responsibly.

Needless to say, all the casinos we have mentioned follow the gambling laws in Canada. Being the second largest country in the world by area, Canada has a long and interesting history with gambling. Therefore, its laws have been changing throughout the years, like the legal gambling age, which now varies between 18 and 19 years old.

Conclusion

To conclude, regarding the question: ‘When are casinos reopening in Saskatchewan?’, we have said that they have been open for over a year. They all started with strict restrictions; however, they are now fully operational. Whereas SIGA and SaskGaming are still economically recovering from the COVID-19 crisis, they have done all they could to maintain their employees’ stability.

Indoor Smoking in Atlantic City Casinos Splits Worker Opinions

Indoor Smoking in Atlantic City Casinos Splits Worker Opinions

Although Unite Here Local 54 is the leading Atlantic City worker union, several other employee organizations have united in support of the change, resulting in mixed messages on the topic.

Industry and Unions Fear a Potential Downturn

Unite Here Local 54 stands together with the Casino Association of New Jersey (CANJ), urging state lawmakers to reconsider their intentions. Their primary concern is that a ban on smoking would hurt Atlantic City’s status and drive customers away, hurting revenue. Local 54 president Bob McDevitt commented on the situation in local media outlet NJ Spotlight, warning that alienating smokers would have a widespread impact.

If people opt not to go…, it won’t just have an effect on folks who are dealers, and folks who are bartenders.

Bob McDevitt, Unite Here Local 54 president

CANJ supports that opinion, expressing concern that fewer gamblers would hurt Atlantic City resorts and other businesses like shopping, dining, and entertainment. The two organizations are the primary representatives of the area’s gaming industry and its staff, but this does not mean that all workers share their sentiments.

Lawmakers and Many Workers Are Pro-Ban

Although Local 54 claims to represent more than 10,000 employees, 2,500 casino workers united in May to push for the ban. They blamed the industry for valuing their bottom line more than their staff’s well-being, expressing fear for their health in a workplace filled with potentially deadly secondhand smoke.

State lawmakers generally support a complete indoor smoking ban. However, internal politicking has caused the procedure to stall despite the support of Gov. Phil Murphy, who is prepared to sign such a bill as soon as it reaches his desk. New Jersey State Senator Joe Vitale has been especially outspoken regarding the matter, urging immediate action.

There are people who are getting sick. Some are dying. It’s really prehistoric and immoral.

Joe Vitale, New Jersey State Senator

Despite the split in worker opinions, lawmakers and industry representatives believe that a complete smoking ban is most likely a matter of when not if. CANJ president Mark Giannantonio agreed with that sentiment but opposed efforts to do so right now in fear of destabilizing the industry. Despite his worries, twenty states already ban smoking in casinos without experiencing any significant downturn, indicating that improving staff well-being should likely precede the industry’s unfounded fears.

Hard Rock Hotel, Casino Have New Management in AC

Hard Rock Hotel, Casino Have New Management in AC

The move comes in the face of the company pushing to increase its market share, and further solidify its presence in the region.

New Management in Atlantic City

The two positions were taken by George Goldhoff and Mike Sampson, respectively, with their stepping in still subject to approval by New Jersey’s gambling regulators. Goldhoff is president of the Hard Rock Casino Cincinnati, which was rebranded a few years ago. Jim Allen, chairman of Hard Rock International, praised Goldhoff for his efforts there.

“In just three years of rebranding our property in Cincinnati, he was able to make that casino the leader in the market,” Allen said. This, coupled with Goldhoff’s previous management- and C-level experience means the company feels he can propel the Atlantic City team into “the next era” of gaming and hospitality for Hard Rock in the area.

Sampson’s experience, on the other hand, is with multiple gaming companies, including Seneca Gaming and Trump Entertainment Resorts. It’s an interesting coincidence that the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Atlantic City is actually the former-President Trump’s Taj Mahal casino site. The failed casino was purchased in 2017, and Hard Rock reopened it in 2018.

Hard Rock Atlantic City is trying to capture the number one spot of market share in the region, and the company has been trying hard to make that come to fruition. The latest management change is just part of the overarching plan, and it certainly isn’t the only move the company has made recently.

Hard Rock Continued Investments

Hard Rock has long been established in the market as a leading name, and its ambitions for AC are a natural continuation of that. During its fourth anniversary celebration, the Hard Rock AC shared its overall donations to charities were over $1 million. Additionally, last December’s Pinktober campaign resulted in over $1 million in donations for breast cancer research alone.

Expansions, efforts to gain market share, and acquisitions usually involve a large investment, and Hard Rock hasn’t neglected investing in its own most valuable resource – its employees. In September last year, the company raised the salaries for its 10,000 people in its US workforce. The investment was a total of $100 million.

Another notable investment the company made in the US gambling market was its The Mirage acquisition. The bid was made quite some time ago, and Hard Rock made sure to clarify its plans for the venue – reconstruction and no immediate plans for closing the property, which bodes well for both the business, as well as current employees.

Even when constructing new casinos, Hard Rock is making sure that support for the community is high on the priorities list. Its fully-fledged Rockford Casino is slated for a November 2023 launch, but the operator has already made contributions to a well-known local charity. It’s called the Rockford Promise, and many locals are acknowledging the act of good faith by Hard Rock.

Can Titans End Their 6-Game Losing Streak?

Not too long ago, the Titans looked like a team that was going to raise hell in the playoffs. After 10 games, they were 7-3 and it looked certain that they were going to qualify for the playoffs. However, since then, they’re 0-6 with a couple of shocking losses (e.g., the 19-14 loss to the Houston Texans).

If you’re wondering what happened to the Titans, the answer is injuries. A number of players in key positions got injured over the last couple of months. Some of them have made it back to the roster, which is great news. The bad news is that in the meantime, some others got on IR, most notably, their starting quarterback Ryan Tannehill.

It’s very likely Tannehill will miss the Week 18 game, which means that backup QB Joshua Dobbs will take the role of the signal-caller on Saturday. He made his first start as a Titan last weekend, when he went 29-for39 for 232 yards and one touchdown, while one of his passes got intercepted. Those aren’t too bad numbers, but his teammates just didn’t make use of his throws.

Still, to be fair to them, they did face one of the toughest defenses in the league – the Dallas Cowboys. This time, their job looks easier, but the trouble is that the Jags are going to be super motivated to get a win.

Jaguars to Cash In on Their Superb Form

The Jaguars are 4-0 since the surprising blowout loss to the Detroit Lions. When they lost 40-14 to the Lions, it seemed as if their playoff dreams are over. However, in their next game, they defeated the Titans, then went on to beat the Cowboys, Jets, and Texans.

Unfortunately for them, that wasn’t enough to secure the no.1 spot in the AFC South. They still need to beat the Titans to do so. Luckily for them, they look like a team that can do it.

Most of their key men are fit and ready for the Week 18 clash. More importantly, their crucial players are playing with confidence, which came after a couple of superb performances. Their QB Trevor Lawrence was nothing short of brilliant in December, throwing for three TDs against the Titans and four against the mighty Cowboys.

He did, however, fail to throw a single TD pass in the Jags’ final game of 2022 (vs Jets) as well as in their first game of 2023 (vs Texans). Is this something that should worry them?

Tennessee Titans vs Jacksonville Jaguars Prediction

The Titans’ strongest weapon this season is their defense. We think these guys have what it takes to tame Lawrence & Co. The problem is that a good defensive performance probably won’t be enough for the Titans.

Their offense doesn’t look very sharp, especially not now that their starting QB is out with an injury. That’s why the only logical prediction is a Jaguars win, albeit minimal (probably by no more than a field goal).

Picks: Jacksonville Jaguars to win; under to hit

Cherish Andrews Wins GPI Female POY, Stephen Song Both Overall & Mid-Major POY

Cherish Andrews Wins GPI Female POY, Stephen Song Both Overall & Mid-Major POY

It was a December to remember for Cherish Andrews and Stephen Song, both of whom finished 2022 with a bang and are now officially Global Poker Index (GPI) Player of the Year winners.

Andrews rallied late to overtake Angela Jordison for Female Player of the Year. Song captured the overall GPI Player of the Year in a tight 10-player race, and also narrowly beat out Jordison for Mid-Major Player of the Year, which recognizes success in events with buy-ins up to $2,500.

The two champions, along with Jordison, each had breakout years. Although the usual suspects didn’t win the major awards, many came close, including Alex Foxen, the two-time GPI Player of the Year, and his wife Kristen Foxen, the three-time GPI Female Player of the Year recipient.

According to the GPI, both Song and Andrews will be invited to accept their trophies at the Global Poker Awards ceremony at the PokerGO Studio at ARIA in Las Vegas – broadcast exclusively on PokerGO. An official announcement on the date for the 4th Global Poker Awards is expected next week.

How Andrews Won GPI Female Player of the Year

Cherish Andrews

At the start of the final month, the Female Player of the Year race was essentially down to two players — Andrews and Jordison, who was leading the way with 2,483 points. Christina Gollins, with 2,110 points, was still within striking distance, but would need a banner WPT World Championship series at Wynn Las Vegas to have a shot.

Jordison, who led Andrews by about 250 points heading into December, had a solid month. She cashed in three tournaments, including a $31,000 score for fifth place in an MSPT event at Venetian.

But she ran into a buzzsaw when Andrews wrapped up the year with three deep runs at the WPT World Championship that started with a sixth-place finish in a $3,000 buy-in tournament at Wynn for $78,045, and finished with a title in an $1,100 buy-in event at the same venue for $131,912. In between there, she scored her largest career cash — $259,200 — for winning a $10,100 buy-in tournament at Wynn.

For the year, Andrews, the girlfriend of talented poker pro Brock Wilson, cashed for $758,513, doubling her previous earnings.

How Song Won Two Awards

Stephen Song

Song didn’t enter the year among those expected to contend for GPI Player of the Year, but he finished 2022 atop the standings while also claiming the GPI Mid-Major Player of the Year award.

What put him over the top was his impressive title run at the WPT Prime Championship at Wynn in December, beating out 5,430 entries in the $1,100 buy-in tournament to win $712,650.

2022 GPI Mid-Major Player of the Year Standings

1 Stephen Song 2,580
2 Angela Jordison 2,539
3 Julien Alexan Sitbon 2,415
4 Jared Ingles 2,399

For the year, he cashed for $2,289,059 in live poker tournaments, according to Hendon Mob, bringing his career earnings to just over $5 million. He racked up 44 live tournament cashes around the United States.

In doing so, he won a close race against Jordison for the Mid-Major POY award (2,580 to 2,539 points) and narrowly beat out Adam Hendrix, Jeremy Ausmus, Chad Eveslage, and a host of other skilled pros for the overall POY honors.

The 3,543 points Song accumulated in the overall standings was just 17 more than Hendrix, who finished runner up. Stephen Chidwick ended the year in 10th place at 3,323 points, just 220 off the lead. There were 10-15 players heading into December who were still in contention.

Song and Andrews took the reins from accused poker cheater Ali Imsirovic and Nadya Magnus, winners of the 2021 GPI Player of the Year and Female Player of the Year awards.

Among those who won the international awards included Davidi Kitai (Belgium), Farid Jattin (Colombia), Koray Aldemir (Germany), Yuval Bronshtein (Israel), Paul Phua (Malaysia), Espen Jorstad (Norway), Stephen Chidwick (United Kingdom), and of course Stephen Song (United States).

  • Time: 3:00 PM ET
  • How to Watch: ESPN+

Barca Clinging onto the No. 1 Spot

On the last day of 2022, Barcelona drew 1-1 with Espanyol, which came as a huge shock as they were -500 favorites. Not winning that game meant that Real Madrid was able to get to even points with them. In fact, the only reason why Xavi’s team is still sitting top of the table is that they got a better score difference than the reigning champions.

The reason why they failed to beat their intercity rivals is that they just couldn’t break Espanyol’s defensive wall more than once. Barca had 21 goal attempts, but only one of those went in. Further, they had the ball in their possession 77% of the time.

We expect to see something similar in Sunday’s game, but that exactly is what needs to worry their fans. The thing is that Atletico Madrid might have the very best defense in the league.

Atleti to “Park the Bus” on Sunday

Barcelona is the team that’s conceded the fewest goals in La Liga this season. The reason behind this is that their midfield has been the dominant force throughout the season, not allowing the opposition to create many goal chances.

When it comes to Atletico, their defense has been as good as always. They’re conceding under 1.0 goals per game, which is no surprise knowing how good their defenders are. We did, however, see them allow some unexpected goals in a couple of games last year. For instance, they conceded three goals to Cadiz CF in October.

The good news for Atleti fans is that in their first game of 2023, they kept a clean sheet – they defeated Elche 2-0.

Atletico Madrid vs Barcelona Prediction

Barca beat Atletico only once in their previous five duels played in Madrid. Plus, the previous two Atletico vs Barcelona games at Metropolitano Stadium were won by the hosts. We think something similar might happen this Sunday as well. Atleti has experience on their side, not to mention that the fans are going to give them an extra boost if they need it.

Picks: Atletico Madrid and under 2.5 goals
