ICE London under Review, Competes with Three Other Cities

ICE London under Review, Competes with Three Other Cities

London has been hosting ICE since the inception of the trade exhibition but this may change starting in 2025 as the event organizer, Clarion Gaming, has put the location of the event to a competitive bid.

‘Customer-Centric’ Process

Clarion Gaming announced that four major cities, London, Barcelona, Madrid, and Paris, will be subjected to a competitive process that will determine where the ICE event will take place from 2025 to 2029.

Commenting on the announcement, Clarion Gaming’s group managing director, Alex Pratt, outlined that the competitive process would be “robust” and “customer-centric” and will look to make a decision that will be “in the best interest” of all stakeholders and the global gaming industry.

“The four short-listed cities will progress through a selection process with the help of the experienced and knowledgeable team at Equimore which is overseeing every aspect of what is a robust program,” Pratt said.

Equimore, an advisory and services agency focused on helping event organizers make better location choices and strategic decisions, will leverage its knowledge of markets and cities to assist Clarion Gaming with the selection of the new ICE location.

Strategic Review of ICE London

The announcement of the competitive bid process marked the launch of the biggest strategic review of ICE London since the popular gambling industry trade exhibition merged with the International Gaming Expo (IGE) and the Amusement Trades Exhibition International (ATEI) in 2009.

Besides short-listing the four cities as meeting the criteria in the selection process, Clarion Gaming noted that it would take into account concerns and considerations expressed by diverse stakeholders before making the final decision.

“By pursuing all due diligence we will identify the city that’s best equipped to not only host an event which continues to play such a central role in helping to create opportunity and prosperity for gaming businesses of all sizes, across every vertical and in every global jurisdiction, but also demonstrate its leadership in the sector,” said Pratt, explicitly adding that the company “will not be making any further comments during the official process” in the name of the process transparency.

The event organizer is expecting the 2023 edition of ICE London to break the record of national representation by featuring exhibitors from 68 nations around the world. The previous high was registered during ICE London 2020 when the exhibition saw representatives of 65 countries display their products and services and exchange experiences with the industry.

PointsBet Posts Impressive Q2 FY23 Results

PointsBet Posts Impressive Q2 FY23 Results

The global sports betting operator saw metrics increase across the board, with overall handle skyrocketing by 56%.

PointsBet Recorded Favorable Financial Results

As reported by the Australian company, PointsBet’s sports betting turnover for the final quarter of the year sat at $1.46 billion (in USD), representing a 56% year-on-year increase. Total gross win from the vertical, meanwhile, was $107 million, which marks a 14% increase from the respective prior-year period.

A huge part of the company’s annual turnover came from its US operations. PointsBet reported a turnover of $740 million from the United States, translating into a gross win of around $39 million. The turnover represented an annual growth of 75%, which the company attributed to its expanded operations in the region.

Australian turnover, meanwhile, was $661 million, up 29% year-on-year. Gross win remained more or less the same at $65 million.

Throughout 2022, the company launched its operations in several new US states and enjoyed a strong trading performance in October and November. PointsBet is now also available in Ontario where handle reached $56.7 million, a whopping 284% quarter-on-quarter increase. Gross win from the region was $2.5 million.

iGaming operations also performed favorably, with the company recording a total iGaming net win of $15.2 million for the quarter. More than half of this ($8.6 million) was contributed by the company’s US operations.

The Company Plans to Cut Its Marketing Spend as Shares Fluctuate

Other reported metrics included PointsBet’s forecasts for its marketing expenses for FY 2023. The company hopes that these will sit at around $63 million, down from $83 million in FT 2022. This projection was provided in contrast to the rising marketing spend which saw PointsBet pay more for marketing in Q2 2023 than it did in the previous quarter.

The cost of sales, meanwhile, increased from $28.8 million in Q2 2022 to $43.2 million in Q2 2023.

The company experienced some performance setbacks because of negative VIP variance but recorded overall favorable results despite the difficulties.

While the company posted record quarterly results, the company’s shares took a dip on January 31, 2023. The operator’s share price has been fluctuating throughout January and sits at $1.02 (in USD) as of the time of this writing.

In other news, two weeks ago, the company secured responsible gambling accreditation from the Responsible Gambling Council. The distinction was awarded to both PointsBet USA and PointsBet Canada, highlighting the company’s commitment to sustainability and player safety.

This Made Me Uncomfortable – Gambling With An Edge

Putting Bills Into a Machine

Bonnie and I were at Harrah’s in Cherokee, NC for a Caesars Seven Stars trip. Cherokee is in the Smoky Mountains and a world away from Las Vegas. Plus, they have $5 NSU Deuces Wild.

For a Seven Stars trip, you get up to $1,200 airfare, $500 in resort credit, and transportation to and from the airport. The airport means either Asheville (about 50 miles away, but not a direct flight) or Atlanta, which is 160 miles away (which is much easier to get to). We usually fly into Atlanta.

Because I don’t want to carry a lot of money through airports, I have a line of credit set up at Cherokee. My usual pattern is to take out a $20,000 marker when I get there, denominated in $2,500 TITO (ticket in ticket out) tickets. At the beginning of each session, I like to have three of those TITOs on me ($5 NSU definitely can turn sour periodically) and keep the rest locked up. If my first $20,000 gets lost in the machines, I take another marker and get more.

If (or rather when — although it doesn’t happen every trip) I hit a $20,000 royal flush, I collect another eight $2,500 TITOs. For $5,000 four deuce hands, I collect two such tickets. I do play other games as well and sometimes hit W-2Gs in other amounts, but these are infrequent and I usually just take cash.

The machines only take up to $2,999.99 before they spit out tickets. Especially when I start with $2,500, I can easily go over that limit hitting multiple wild royals ($625), five of a kinds ($400), straight flushes ($250), or even $100 four of a kinds and full houses. It’s not uncommon having several of these tickets. When I run out of money in the machine, I’ll always use the smaller tickets first, keeping the ones in $2,500 increments. This makes counting money easier.

On this particular trip, we were scheduled to leave the hotel for the airport at 9:30 on a Wednesday morning. At 6:00 the previous evening, I went to the cage to cash out. This trip happened to be profitable (trust me they aren’t all that way), so I had a number of $2,500 tickets. My goal was to pay off the $20,000 marker and receive a check for the remainder. The casino has done this previously and it isn’t a problem.

This time, however, one of the $2,500 TITOs registered as “void” in the system. I was paid by check for the remaining TITOs and told that this voided ticket was still pending and I would not receive payment until this issue was resolved in my favor. If it was.

I demanded to speak to a supervisor.  The supervisor arrived and told me that some other supervisor, not her, marked this particular TITO as void and she didn’t know why. The office that audits these things was closed at the moment. When it opened up in the morning, I would either be paid or be told why I wasn’t going to be paid. If I already had left the property when it was resolved in my favor, if it was, I would be mailed a check. There was nothing she could do about it now. She was polite enough, but it quickly became clear that she wasn’t going to budge from her position, so arguing with her would just create a scene without getting any quicker resolution. So I shut up and left.

While this casino is managed by Harrah’s, it is owned by a band of Cherokee Indians. If there becomes a dispute about the $2,500, it gets resolved in tribal court. United States courts have little or no jurisdiction on this kind of matter. I could hire a lawyer, but he’d have to sue in the tribal court and the elders of the tribe itself would decide what the resolution would be. Plus, a dispute of $2,500 is too small to interest an attorney. There is no small claims tribal court.

Although my host had gone home for the day, he’s been employed there for almost 20 years. If anybody knew how to get things done, he was the guy. I hoped. I sent him an email explaining what had happened. I explained that the only way I ever got one of these $2,500 TITOs was from the original marker or because of a jackpot. When I signed for them, I signed that I received the correct number of tickets and they all were for $2,500. Whether or not one of them had been voided prior to me receiving it, I had no way of knowing that.

At this point, I’m thinking (hoping, really) there’s an innocent explanation. This was my sixth trip to the resort and I had not run into any significant problem previously. Yes, every tribal casino has some policies that are different from those of non-tribal casinos, but working within those policies hadn’t been that difficult for me. At least not yet.

The “most likely” explanation, to my mind, was that one of the times when I was scheduled to receive eight TITOs, nine were accidentally printed. Before the TITOs ever got to me, one of them was voided — both physically (however they do that there) and in the computer system. Somehow, the one they physically voided was not the one they voided in the computer system.

I explained to my host that I was not taking any TITOs with me when I left. Every one I received was either inserted into a slot or video poker machine, or turned back into the cage to be redeemed. If I was given a voided one, there must be another ticket for $2,500 that was created but not cashed so far. If so, that money belonged to me.

Losing $2,500 in this way wouldn’t have been a disaster for me, but it was annoying. Having this money “stolen” from me would definitely affect whether we returned there. If I told you I didn’t lose any sleep over this that night I’d be lying.

At 8:30 the next morning, while Bonnie and I were eating breakfast, my host called me up and told me it had been resolved and I could go to the cage and pick up my money. My host had called up the cage manager and together they decided to honor the ticket. It was a legitimate Harrah’s Cherokee TITO and I had indeed signed for receiving that particular ticket. So, it should be honored by the casino. And it was.

I was relieved, and picked up my money. I was optimistic that this would be resolved in this manner, but nothing was certain until I had the cash. And now I did. Thank you very much.

The fact that this happened at a tribal casino is essentially irrelevant. The same kind of situation could have happened at any casino. They are financial institutions, of a sort, and have procedures that must be followed. When something “unusual” happens, they have to figure out how to make it right. The only reason that being a tribal casino changed things would be if we couldn’t reach agreement on how to make things right. But that didn’t happen here, and for that I’m relieved.

Harrah’s Cherokee handled this well, in my opinion. Although I would have preferred to be paid immediately when I first presented the TITO, I understand that all the i’s have to be dotted and the t’s crossed. This took some time, but not an inordinate amount of time.

Bonnie and I are looking forward to our next trip to that casino.

BCLC Upgrades Voluntary Self-Exclusion Program Game Break

BCLC Upgrades Voluntary Self-Exclusion Program Game Break

The fresh changes adopted by the British Columbia Lottery Corporation (BCLC) are meant to cut stigma and barriers and make the “Game Break” program more approachable to a larger number of individuals.

What’s New: The “Game Plan” Course

While the program will hold on to the same terms of enrolment for the six-month, 12-month, 24-month, and 36-month terms, it will introduce a series of new elements. The list includes an active reinstatement process for players who decide to go back to gambling. The process is meant to provide former players with enhanced support to ease their return. This means that former gamers who completed a term and decided to play again would have to take an additional online course.

The “Game Plan” course will help individuals decide if going back to their old gaming habits is the right thing to do by giving them the chance to self-reflect and establish clear goals prior to making their official return. Plus, participants will be allowed to keep extending their “Game Break” term.

According to BCLC’s director of player health, Ryan McCarthy, the corporation that inked a deal with Everi Holdings for its anti-money laundering solutions wishes to help players “gamble within their time and money limits.” At the same time, BCLC wants players to feel more empowered to catch a break whenever they feel they need one.

McCarthy further explained that taking a break is usually considered a positive choice, which is why they decided to create the “Game Break” program to cut more barriers and lead to the destigmatization of self-exclusion in the gambling world.

Helping Players Make More Informed Decisions

The inclusion of the new reinstatement process should help participants get a better understanding of their gambling behaviors provided they feel they would like to go back to playing.

McCarthy spoke about the changes brought to the original self-exclusion program, calling them additional tools for assisting individuals with making more informed decisions while offering “support and resources to help them practice positive play behaviors.”

The upgraded branding of the “Game Break” program that is now more supportive and inviting mirrors BCLC’s continuous determination to reach higher standards of care for players.

At the start of the year, BCLC announced it would receive an additional boost for its PlayNow.com brand via OpenBet, a worldwide leader in betting solutions. As part of the deal, BCLC would also introduce PlayNow.com to third-party providers to allow players to enjoy more fulfilling casino gaming and sports betting experiences.

North Dakota Senate Stalls Sports Betting Bill

North Dakota Senate Stalls Sports Betting Bill

The state is currently on its way toward legalizing sports betting outside tribal lands, allowing mobile sportsbooks entry into a relatively untapped market. Senate Bill 2358 outlines a new sports betting task force charged with developing an implementation and regulatory framework for online sports betting. However, the Senate’s decision to postpone their judgment may dampen hopes for a quick resolution.

Mobile Sportsbooks May Arrive as Soon as 2025

North Dakota tried to legalize online sports betting in 2019 and 2021, but neither attempt gained traction. However, the most recent initiative has gathered significant momentum, winning the support of 12 representatives – 11 Republicans and 1 Democrat. Proponents of the measure expressed concern regarding the spread of unlicensed operators that undermine taxes and do not provide consumer protections.

The North Dakota House approved House Concurrent Resolution 3002 – the next step toward a mobile sports betting referendum on the 2024 ballot. If the public supports the legislation, North Dakota’s first mobile sportsbooks should come online by the end of 2025. However, the measure may never make it to the ballots if it does not receive Senate approval, and the latest developments have caused some concern.

The Senate Preferred to Exercise Caution

Senate Bill 2358, an accompanying piece of legislation, met surprising resistance after the Senate postponed its final decision. The bill envisions the creation of a sports betting task force to develop a plan for online sports betting implementation and regulation and prepare any necessary legislation. However, the Senate was hesitant to proceed, neither approving nor denying the measure.

We’ll just let this percolate for a little bit before we take any action on it.

North Dakota state Sen. Diane Larson

The Senate’s lack of decisiveness is understandable, given the contentious nature of sports betting reforms. On its own, Bill 2358 holds little cause for concern, dealing with safeguarding state interests, ensuring consumer protection, and guaranteeing sports integrity. Its continued existence also hinges on voters supporting the primary sports betting legislation.

During the Senate’s latest meeting on Monday, representatives discussed their overall views on gambling, the proposed reforms, and the growing pressure to introduce online sports betting amidst rapid nationwide adoption. Their decision will impact North Dakota voters for years to come, so taking time to think things through is not necessarily a bad sign.

NCPG Warns US iGaming States Fail to Meet RG Framework

NCPG Warns US iGaming States Fail to Meet RG Framework

On Monday, the Council released its 2022 report, probing into the compliance of states with its IRGS where iGaming is legal. Judging by the recent report, titled “US Online Responsible Gaming Regulations: An Evaluation Against National Council on Problem Gambling Standards,” the majority of states where online gambling activities are legal failed to meet the responsible gambling requirements standard for internet gambling activities set by the Council.

The report, titled US Online Responsible Gaming Regulations: An Evaluation Against National Council on Problem Gambling Standards finds that regulations in four of the seven states where iGaming is legal fall drastically short of NCPG’s minimum responsible gambling standards,

reads a statement released by the National Council on Problem Gambling

There are currently seven US states that offer legal online gambling activities. The NCPG’s new report reveals that four major jurisdictions, namely, Nevada, Michigan, Delaware and West Virginia “do not mandate operators provide players with sufficient responsible gambling protections.” This in other words means that those states completely fail to meet the IRGS framework developed by the NCPG.

What’s more worrying is that the remaining three states where iGaming is legal, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Connecticut, meet only partially the responsible gambling requirements. The NCPG explained that the three states cover some minimum, but “still fall short of meeting the full list” of responsible gambling requirements.

NCPG Remains Committed to Boosting RG Efforts

Back in 2012, the NCPG developed the IRGS which has received updates regularly amid the ongoing changes within the online gambling market in the country. Ultimately, the standard seeks to address key issues and provide recommendations within the responsible gambling vertical.

IRGS sets the standard for consumers to ensure whichever operator they choose; they can be confident that the platform has the responsible gambling tools necessary to assist in playing safely,

explains the NCPG

According to the Council, gambling addiction can be countered via a combination of education, treatment, research, as well as a public health strategy. Despite the results of the new probe, the NCPG continues to support responsible gambling efforts and recommends every state where iGaming is legal to ensure compliance with the IRGS.

Macau hosted half a million visitors during Chinese New Year

Macau hosted half a million visitors during Chinese New Year

Macau welcomed almost half a million tourists during the Chinese New Year festive week starting January 21st, which is a three times larger number than the same period last year. The rapid growth in these numbers started after the city re-opened on January 8th to take giant steps in getting back to the normal pre-pandemic rhythm.

Three times more visitors:

The city recorded a total of  451,047 visitor arrivals over the Gold Week of the Chinese New Year, which is 297 percent more on a year-on-year basis. On average, it booked 64,435 tourists a day during the seven-day period whereas the peak in visitor arrivals was reached in the middle of the week to count 90,391 tourists, which represented a 311.5 percent upturn in comparison to the same period last year.

Mainland China and Hong Kong visitors:

Industry professionals expect that Macau will continue to host an average of 30,000 to 40,000 tourists daily as the city continues to return to pre-pandemic levels. The 2019 visitor record set at 1.2 million arrivals seems within the reach of the region again, after three years of closure. This year, a huge number of tourists came from mainland China, but also Hong Kong which totaled at 164,672, or 36.5 percent of all visits to account for a stunning annual increase of 2,601 percent.

According to Asia Gaming Brief, Macau’s tourism bureau said the number of visitor arrivals during the festive period had “surpassed expectations.” The head of Macau’s tourism office expressed content over the number of Hong Kong visitors during the festive week, and the success of programs offered to them, such as free return tickets for at least one overnight stay in Macau.

High occupancy levels:

During the festival, average hotel occupancy reached 85.7 percent, which is a 22.4 percentage point yearly increase, with the highest occupancy level of 92.1 percent experienced on January 24 which marked the peak of tourist arrivals in the region. As expected, accommodation rates were also up by nearly 50 percent and reached MOP1,575 ($195.3) during the peak.

Still lacking manpower:

The resorts still face a lack of manpower due to the December surge in Covid-19 numbers. Las Vegas Sands Corp, the parent of Macau casino resort operator Sands China Ltd, stated on Wednesday that it was not operating 2,200 rooms at its Londoner Macao resort in the Cotai district for having been “short of manpower relative to full operating capacity”, but all casino operators continue to ramp up after the January 8 re-opening.

Pursuing the common goal:

Linda Chen, Vice Chairman and President of one of the six casino concessionaires Wynn Macau, told the media that she was happy with the occupancy figures and hopes these would be maintained. “The hotel occupancy has been very satisfactory. I hope that this trend will continue long term. We need to maintain the good work currently ongoing – not only the hotels and tourism sector but also pursuing the common goal of development of Macau’s diversified tourism products”, said Chen.
