Germany Targets Gambling, Alcohol and Smoking Ads

Germany ‘s GGL Vows to Enforce the Rules

The Federal Drug Commissioner noted that German laws regarding addictive substances and sports betting were among the most relaxed in Europe, resulting in hundreds of thousands of deaths each year. Blienert proposed an initial advertising ban and additional targeted measures against offending categories. The advertising industry opposed his claims, denying any need for legislative intervention.

Germany Has Relatively Lax Restrictions

According to Blienert, few other European countries treated alcohol and tobacco as liberally as Germany. The Commissioner added that addictive substances accounted for 150,000 deaths each year, and their impact on the country’s youth would continue to grow. Alcohol consumption in Germany is currently legal at age 14 with parental supervision.

Blienert called for comprehensive countermeasures to the alcohol and tobacco industries, starting with sensible youth protection and advertising restrictions. His immediate goal would be to remove ads online and in traditional media, at least during prime time, if not entirely. The Drug Commissioner also proposed that profits from alcohol and drug taxation should contribute to addiction prevention and counseling programs.

We need a real paradigm shift, a change of thinking when it comes to drugs and addiction policy.

Burkhard Blienert, Federal Drug Commissioner

Advertising industry representatives have already voiced their objections, disregarding any need for further safeguards. They argued that alcohol advertising already had adequate restrictions and that addressing young people was strictly prohibited. According to them, none of the categories required any new legislative action, as existing laws were already robust and included self-regulation requirements.

Gambling Addiction Remains a Contentious Topic

Sports betting also faced harsh criticism from Blienert, who insisted on improved youth and consumer protections. The Commissioner noted that one in eight adults in Germany. He acknowledged that federal governments had the last word in that regard, recommending a ban on all sports betting advertisements before 9 p.m., matching restrictions regarding online casinos.

This occasion is not the first time Blienert has tried to raise awareness of gambling addiction. In September 2022, he joined Germany’s Federal Center for Health Education, calling for a watershed ban on gambling advertising. He expressed concern regarding the rapid explosion in sports betting and gaming ads, particularly online, where the risk of addiction is significantly higher.

Any significant changes regarding gambling restrictions would likely require the input of Germany‘s new federal gambling regulator. The Gemeinsamen Glücksspielbehörde der Länder (GGL) currently focuses on issuing licenses to trusted operators and rooting out illegal gambling operations. Once the initial rush to market is complete, the authority should be able to fully commit to enforcing existing regulations, undoubtedly playing a significant role in future legislative changes.

Sydney Swans Extends Reclaim the Game Initiative Participation

Sydney Swans Extends Reclaim the Game Initiative Participation

The Australian Football League (AFL) club has already spent the last two years showing its support for the initiative that aims to completely remove gambling advertising from sports. The fresh extension of the agreement will see the club spend the next two years continuing to reaffirm its commitment to put an end to the normalization of sports betting.

The Initiative Is Supported by the Club’s Fans

The team has been the first AFL club to ink a partnership with the Reclaim the Game initiative that belongs to the government of New South Wales. So far, the club’s support for the initiative has been joined by many of its fans. Seven out of 10 Sydney Swans supporters believe gambling should not be included in the experience while nine out of 10 fans agreed about an overload of gambling advertising.

By deciding to continue the agreement, the club wants to raise even more awareness of the potential risks tied to gambling. They also wish to eliminate sports betting ads at their Sydney Cricket Ground home stadium.

The decision is aimed at both men’s and women’s home matches. The club’s chief executive officer Tom Harley expressed his excitement to keep collaborating with GambleAware. The latter is now busy expanding its partnership with Sydney Swans’ women’s team.

Harley also spoke about the new partnership extension with GambleAware that will help the club continue its “important work in this area.” He described the partnership as one that will help their “ambition to provide a more family-friendly sporting experience” during all their home matches.

How Was the Reclaim the Game Initiative Born?

The omnipresence of sports betting advertising and sponsorships has turned into a reality of our times. In 2021 alone, sports betting companies spent a grand total of $287.2 million on sports advertising.

Youngsters are exposed to too many sports betting ads which causes many of them to consider betting a normal part of the sports-watching experience. Close to half of teenagers ages 12 to 17 watch gambling ads on TV while watching sports and races on TV every week.

GambleAware decided to collaborate with NSW sporting clubs and take an important stand against this phenomenon through the Reclaim the Game initiative which started in 2020. Their shared goal is to challenge the powerful impact of sports betting advertising on sports fans.

The Reclaim the Game initiative has attracted numerous partners in Australia’s A-League, the National Rugby League, the National Basketball League, and a series of important cricket competitions.

So far, all of GambleAware’s partners have successfully turned down sports betting sponsorships and continued to express their commitment to tackling sports betting advertising at their home games.

Last October, A-League Western Sydney Wanderers and Macarthur FC together with Cricket NSW joined the same initiative.

Top 5 Super Bowl Winning Coaches – Best SB Coaches Of All Time

The Top 5 Super Bowl Winning Coaches Of All Time

The NFL is home to some of the biggest egos in sport. The best battle it out each week to try and reign supreme over their rivals.

So, it goes without saying there are some prominent personalities – and not always on the field.

Some NFL coaches are larger than life and have dragged their teams to Super Bowl success over their careers. Of course, coaches are not idolized in the same way players are, but the great ones are put on a pedestal quite unlike any other in the world of sport.

In this article, we’ll take a look at the greatest Super Bowl-winning coaches in the history of the NFL and why they deserve their status at the top of America’s game.

1. Bill Belichick

Bill Belichick is a name synonymous with success.

He holds the NFL head coach records for most Super Bowl wins (six), most playoff wins (31), tied most playoff appearances (19), and championship game appearances (nine), to name but a few.

Across a 30-year NFL career, his teams have had a ruthless streak, and his success has been based on building a unit of the right players, not necessarily the best ones.

After all, Tom Brady, his partner in crime and most successful quarterback ever, was not a hot prospect coming into the NFL. He was selected in the sixth round of the NFL draft but was molded into the GOAT by Belichick.

Love him or hate him, no one can argue with the facts: Bill Belichick is the greatest NFL coach of all time.

2. Vince Lombardi

If you’re going to name a trophy after someone, they better be good. It turns out Vince Lombardi was great.

The legend, who the NFL renamed the Super Bowl trophy following his death in 1970, won three NFL championships (pre-Super Bowl era) and the first two Super Bowls.

Lombardi had a 73.8% regular season win rate which was bettered by an outrageous 90% rate in the playoffs.

He’s widely regarded as one of the greatest coaches in the history of US sport and takes his rightful place in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

3. Chuck Noll

The Pittsburgh Steelers have won the joint most Super Bowls (six) in NFL history, and that is primarily thanks to Chuck Noll.

His Steelers team won four Super Bowls in six seasons, from 1974-1979, dominating their competition.

Noll never lost in the Super Bowl, with his team winning on all four occasions, and was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1993 – the first year he was eligible.

Noll was also notably the first head coach in the NFL to start an African American quarterback and one of the first to hire Black assistant coaches.

His record and contribution to football development will be long remembered in Pittsburgh and beyond.

4. Bill Walsh

Bill Walsh was made head coach of the San Francisco 49ers in January 1979, but by the end of the 1980 season, he could have been forgiven for thinking a Super Bowl was one dream too far.

His team had finished the season with a 6-10 record, missing out on the playoffs.

Still, a certain Joe Montana was made starting QB midway through the season, and Walsh knew he was onto a winner.

The 49ers, led by Montana and Walsh, went on to win three Super Bowls from 81-88, changing the fortunes of this long-suffering franchise and creating one of the greatest offensive teams ever.

Like Chuck Noll, Walsh entered into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1993 and finished his career with an impressive 10-4 record in the playoffs.

5. Tom Coughlin

Tom Coughlin has the least Super Bowl wins of any head coach on this list (two), and there are several other coaches with more.

But “Colonel Coughlin” – as he was known by his players – deserves his place amongst the modern greats.

He took over as head coach of the New York Giants in 2004, following their 4-12 season in 2003. He didn’t achieve overnight success but eventually led the team to two Super Bowls in 2008 and 2012.

He makes our list for masterminding one of the biggest upsets in NFL playoff history when the Giants beat the Patriots (coached by you know who) 17-14 at Super Bowl XLII.

Many sportsbooks had the Patriots as high as -13.5 favorites on the points spread.

The “Helmet Catch” – widely regarded as the best Super Bowl play ever – saw back up wide receiver, David Tyree, catch a touchdown pass by pressing the ball against his helmet.

This followed some Houdini level escapes from quarterback Eli Manning.

Coughlin’s team shocked the football world with their victory against the unbeaten Patriots. The Pats were looking to become only the second team in history to win every game of the season, including the Super Bowl.

Thanks for the memories, Colonel.

Final Thoughts

It’s important to acknowledge that some all-time great NFL coaches were missed off our list.

We easily could have included Shula, Landry, or Gibbs but our selections sum up what we think it takes to be a Super Bowl champ.

These five head coaches had unprecedented success over several seasons, often winning against the odds (and sometimes against each other).

If that doesn’t summarize the spirit of football, we don’t know what does.

Stats Perform Secures IBIA Accreditation for Record Three Years in a Row

Stats Perform Secures IBIA Accreditation for Record Three Years in a Row

Stats Perform, a leading sports data and analytics company, has received yet another Data Standards accreditation from the International Betting Integrity Association (IBIA). This notably makes it the first company to ever achieve this accreditation three years in a row.

Stats Perform Receives Its Third Accreditation

The IBIA accreditation reflects Stats Perform’s devotion to integrity in sports data, as well as the company’s firm stance against fraud. The company’s products are used by a number of notable sports betting operators and sports federations around the world, making its commitment to integrity very important to the industry.

Stats Perform’s chief betting officer, Andrew Ashenden, commented on the accreditation, praising his team for achieving the standard for the third year in a row. Ashenden added that this shows why Stats Perform’s Betting and Opta sports data is used by so many pricing providers, sportsbooks and top sports federations.

Stats Perform is a long-term advocate for the highest standards of integrity and quality in sports data because we know it is critical for the accuracy and veracity of sports competitions and the betting markets that cover them

Andrew Ashenden, CBO, Stats Perform

The officer concluded that his team realizes the importance of accurate and trustworthy data to betting companies and sports leagues.

Stats Perform kicked 2023 off with an exclusive data deal with Tennis Australia, expanding its data distribution for licensed sports betting operators.

The IBIA Is Delighted by Stats Perform’s Commitment

The IBIA, meanwhile, praised Stats Perform for its commitment to integrity. Khalid Ali, the chief executive officer of the association, also shared his thoughts on Stats Perform’s performance. He congratulated the company on achieving accreditation for the third year in a row and pointed out that this is why its solutions are so popular.

Ali concluded that the IBIA believes the Data Standards protocols are the key to ensuring a better and healthier sports betting environment.

The IBIA consists of a few dozen gambling operators that are working together for a fraud and corruption-free betting industry. Many of the big gambling companies are a part of the association, with its members being responsible for more than 50% of all the regulated commercial wagering activity in the world.

A few days ago, the IBIA welcomed Simplebet as its latest member. The micro-betting specialist believes that integrity and trust are non-negotiable and, because of that, was excited to join the association. At the beginning of the year, the IBIA was also joined by BetJACK, a company operating sports betting in Ohio.

Niklas Astedt Helps Himself to an 888poker XL Winter Title

Niklas Astedt Helps Himself to an 888poker XL Winter Title

There are very few poker tournament titles that have evaded Niklas Astedt‘s grasp. You can add an 888poker XL Winter series victory to that list after Astedt, playing under his 888poker moniker “tutten7,” triumphed in the $2,100 buy-in High Roller event over the weekend.

888poker may have a reputation for being recreational player friendly but there is also plenty of high stakes action at the site, and demand for it, too. Forty-one unique players purchased ten re-entries between them, meaning the total attendance was 51, and the prize pool a guarantee-busting $102,000.

Finland’s “Inflaatio” was the unfortunate soul that popped the all-important money bubble. The Finn fell in seventh and was the last player to return home empty-handed.

Mexico’s “420SilentBob” busted in sixth for a $5,610 addition to their bankroll, before “SpielerKind” of Ukraine saw their tournament end abruptly in fifth place, a finish worth $7,650. Fourth place and $10,200 went to Lithuania’s “sk8erisz,” and heads-up was set when “ruthy33” crashed out in third for $15,300.

Astedt found himself in a one-on-one battle with “beebsterizer” for the lion’s share of the prize pool. Astedt rarely loses when he is heads-up, and this was not to be one of those rare occasions. The Swedish online poker legend brushed his final opponent aside and claimed the $37,740 top prize, resigning the runner-up to a $25,500 consolation score.

German One-Two in the $35,000 Gtd High Roller

888poker’s other XL Winter series High Roller this weekend saw 50 entries of $1,050 create a $50,000 prize pool. The compact field meant only the top five finishers received some prize money for their efforts, with prizes ranging from $4,000 to $20,000.

Romania’s “bucuresteam” was the first in-the-money bustee. The Romanian collected the $4,000 fifth-place prize money only days after taking down the $30,000 Mystery Bounty Turbo for $7,254. Another XL Winter series champion busted in fourth. “Reggie_Degen” won the $20,000 PKO 6-Max for $5,920, and collected $5,000 in this event.

888poker regular “feerofeero” was eliminated in third for $7,500, before “pactamah23” defeated their fellow German “kellerassel0” heads-up to capture the $20,000 top prize. Second place came with a still welcomed $13,500.

Coral Racing Club Surpasses 50,000 Members

Coral Racing Club, a free-to-join racecourse ownership club for horse racing enthusiasts, has announced that it has surpassed 50,000 in just three months after its creation. The club proudly shared this exciting announcement on Twitter.

50,000 Members & Counting

The club has been quickly expanding ever since its creation in November 2022. As announced by Coral Racing Club, it now boasts a whopping 50,000 members and counting. The club’s simple concept has resonated with fans of racing, attracting many new users. The free-to-play aspect has further helped to sell the concept to the numerous horseracing fans across the United Kingdom.

Amid this exciting announcement, Coral Racing Club promised to continue with the Owner for the Day experiences and exclusive racing events. The company vowed to keep fans closer to the action throughout 2023.

As reported by Gambling Insider, Simon Clare, Coral’s PR director, commented on the announcement. He said that when his team launched the racing club, their primary objectives were to popularize horse racing among the customers of the Coral betting brand. As attested by the huge following the club now has, Clare and his associates have certainly achieved their goal.

Coral Racing Club Provides Premium Experiences to Racing Fans

Through Coral Racing Club, racing enthusiasts can experience a variety of racing-related experiences. Users can become the owners of a racehorse for an event. Before a Coral Racing Club racehorse enters an event, members vote on who the 10 owners will be. Most notably, temporary owners can win prize money if their horse wins an event.

Owners can also visit their horses at the stable and talk with the club’s professional trainers about the animals’ progress. Racing fans can learn more about the races in which the horse will participate and follow its journey.

In addition to the many behind-the-scenes opportunities and seeing everything that goes into training racehorses, club members have the chance to win free raceday tickets for a variety of events and may have their raceday hospitality costs covered.

Coral Racing Club is a venture of the Entain-owned sports betting brand Coral, which is famous for the exciting wagering opportunities it offers to customers. In November, for example, the company brought additional value to its players by introducing Bet Bundles, a set of five bets at a discounted price. This offering was released just before the FIFA World Cup and represented the company’s way of capitalizing on the exciting soccer event.

Dylan Smith Wins $25,000 PCA PLO High Roller for $364,440

Dylan Smith Wins $25,000 PCA PLO High Roller for $364,440

Dylan Smith

Dylan Smith secured his biggest ever live tournament cash as he took down a field of 44 runners to win his first PokerStars Trophy and the $364,440 first-place prize in the $25,000 PokerStars Caribbean Adventure Pot Limit Omaha High Roller at the gorgeous Baha Mar Resort in The Bahamas.

It was a long bubble as seven players fought for six payouts but play quickened after the bursting of the bubble. Shaun Deeb (4th- $121,500) and Jeremy Ausmus (3rd- $163,750) fell in back-to-back hands to get the tournament to heads-up.

German Oliver Weis was Smith’s final opponent, but it was a quick heads-up affair as Smith went into the battle with a two-to-one chip lead. Weis would not double up, as Smith would win and take down the trophy in less than ten hands.

$25,000 PCA PLO High Roller Final Table Results

PLACE PLAYER COUNTRY PRIZE (IN USD)
1 Dylan Smith United States $364,440
  2 Oliver Weis Germany $237,700
3 Jeremy Ausmus United States $163,750
4 Shaun Deeb United States $121,500
  5 Andriy Lyubovetskiy Ukraine $95,100
  6 Joni Jouhkimainen Finland $73,950

Winner’s Reaction

Smith started 2023 on a heater, having taken down another PLO High Roller trophy just two weeks ago in Florida for $ 91,960. Smith is mainly a PLO player, with his last four recorded cashes on the Hendon Mob database all being in PLO tournaments. With this win, Smith has achieved his first-ever six-figure tournament score.

Despite his recent tournament success, Smith told PokerNews that he is primarily a PLO cash game player where he plays high stakes PLO online for stakes as high as $200/$400. Smith said when he first started playing poker, he focused on No Limit Hold’em but moved in with a really good PLO player which encouraged him to switch his focus to the PLO streets.

Smith was joined on his rail by Jake Schwartz, who himself has nearly $4,000,000 in live tournament earnings, as he rode his way to victory. Smith said he will be playing the $25,000 PokerStars Players No Limit Hold’em Championship on Monday, as well as other events on the schedule, as he hopes to continue his 2023 run good.

Action of the Day

The day started with Ausmus as the chip leader and two tables as ten players returned for Day 2. The final table bubble didn’t last long as Andrew Pantling was taken out by Andriy Lyubovetskiy as Pantling called off for his tournament life when Lyubovetskiy check raised all in on the turn.

Lyubovetskiy was propelled into the chip lead when he took out Adam Hendrix as his pocket kings couldn’t hold against the Ukrainian.

Andriy Lyubovetskiy

Seven-handed play lasted for several hours as play slowed on a huge $73,950 money bubble. Deeb was short but managed to survive to avoid being the bubble boy. Eventually, John Zable was the unfortunate bubble boy as his queens couldn’t hold against Joni Jouhkimainen.

Action dramatically quicken after the bubble burst and Jouhkimainen soon followed Zable in hitting the rail as he got involved in a three-way all-in against Deeb and Ausmus. Deeb managed to triple up, which put him in the chip lead as four-handed play commenced.

Shaun Deeb
Shaun Deeb

Smith managed to become chip leader for the first time in the day when he moved all in on the flop in a three-bet pot against Deeb. Deeb called, but Smith was the one able to double up. Deeb would then be eliminated as Deeb got all in with kings against Smith’s aces to be eliminated from the tournament. Ausmus followed suit the very next hand as Smith took out another victim which put him in good stead for victory as he started his heads-up battle against Oliver Weis.

Smith went into heads-up in a dominant position and managed to secure the victory quickly as Smith called Weis’s four-bet all-in to take the tournament victory as the American rivered a flush to secure his first six-figure live tournament score.

That concluded the PokerNews live reporting team’s coverage of the $25,000 PCA PLO High Roller. Be sure to check out the team’s coverage of other events here in The Bahamas, including the $25,000 PokerStars Players Championship, which kicks off Monday at 12 p.m. local time.

What Paul Scully’s Speech Revealed About the UK Gambling Act White Paper

Paul Scully

Just weeks away

The UK government’s long-awaited Gambling Act review is almost here. According to Gambling Minister Paul Scully, his team are “putting the finishing touches” to the white paper. “We’re a matter of weeks away from you all seeing it, and then we can start the process of nailing down details and implementing reforms,” he affirmed.

the white paper is almost ready

Scully made the announcement in a speech given to the Betting and Gaming Council (BGC) at its annual general meeting on Thursday last week. Although the white paper is almost ready, the minister was not keen to give too much away about the paper’s contents.

What he was able to tell the BGC was mostly about the issue of affordability checks, which have proven a divisive issue in the gambling industry.

Affordability checks controversy

In the UK, the idea of an affordability check was borrowed from the banking sector where mortgage brokers needed proof that customers would be able to pay up when the pounds, shillings, and pence came due.

They work in a similar way within the gambling sector. If a player bets and/or loses too much, too fast in a set amount of time, the gaming operator has to freeze that player’s account until some proof of income is forthcoming. What counts as “too much, too fast,” is currently set by the operator.

This issue of affordability checks has been much discussed since the white paper was announced in 2019 off the back of a “Call For Evidence” the prior year. Since then, the paper has flowed fast as treacle through two prime ministerial resignations and the COVID-19 pandemic.

patronizing and a threat to the profitability of the industry

Critics of the gambling industry often view affordability checks as an important way to protect vulnerable players. Critics of affordability checks, on the other hand, view them as patronizing and a threat to the profitability of the industry. Michael Dugher, chief executive of the BGC, has cited a study that suggests that such checks push vulnerable players into the grey and black markets.

Scully tries to split the difference by proposing a more nuanced solution.

Scully gives some insight

In his speech, Scully explained that the government has already noted key areas of concern in regards to gambling. For example, he highlighted “particularly vulnerable customers who can be harmed by even quite small losses” as well as “high spending binge behavior with the potential for lasting financial harm, and high sustained losses over a longer period of time.”

a consideration of financial circumstances can only ever reveal that one type of risk – financial.”

However, the biggest reform he wants to make to affordability checks is in their name. Deeming ‘affordability checks’ the “wrong title” for the protections he and other ministers are envisaging, he proposed the use of ‘financial risk assessments’ instead. He claimed that “a consideration of financial circumstances can only ever reveal that one type of risk – financial.”

The government is unlikely to reveal exactly what these new “financial risk assessments” will look like before the paper is actually published. Even when the paper does come out, that won’t be the end of it. Scully made clear that the paper will serve as guidance, but it will be up to the regulators to turn its recommendations into regulations and up to the government to write the recommendations into law.

It has taken nearly three years for the paper to reach this point. The industry will be waiting anxiously to see how this white paper impacts policy in the years to come.
