Chicago Mayor Candidates for Legalization of Video Gambling

Chicago Mayor Candidates for Legalization of Video Gambling

Both candidates for Chicago mayor – Paul Vallas and Brandon Johnson – would support the legalization of video gambling machines within their city limits if elected in the April 4 election. The candidates would thus change the practice of previous Chicago majors, who exclusively opted to have a brick-and-mortar casino established in the city limits, and expect to create an important revenue source for public investments.

Important revenue source:

According to WBEZ Chicago, former CPS CEO Paul Vallas said he would use ”a fair share” of the gambling revenue to fund investments in the city developments and considers the revenue ”the developer fee money.”  Also, Brandon Johnson stated that he supports legalized video gambling ”as an important revenue source for critical investments in public safety, transportation, housing, and other public accommodations.”

Casino under construction:

These initiatives are made as the first-ever casino in the City of Chicago is being constructed after a successful mediation of Mayor Lori Lightfoot in the deal with the state regulators in 2019. The selected operator is Bally’s and the city officials expect that the casino to be located in the River West area will cash in close to $200 million in revenue to significantly stimulate public funding.

Video gambling proponents and opponents:

The source also reports that local casino operators have mostly been opposed to video gambling machines as they fear that this gambling form will affect the land-based casino revenue. The gambling mogul billionaire Neil Bluhm, who runs Rivers Casino in Des Plaines, is one of them. But his son, Andrew Bluhm, has already made some poker machines investments to testify to the market trends. He also donated $150,000 to the 2019 mayoral campaigns that supported legalized video gambling.

A veil of silence:

In the 2019 mayoral campaign, Paul Vallas had also supported video gambling but said through a spokesperson that he has not spoken to Andrew or Neil Bluhm about his post-election plans regarding the legalization of video gambling machines. At the same time, Andrew Bluhm said that he no longer has an interest in a video gambling terminal business in which he had been involved.

Chicago market potential:

According to data from the Illinois Gaming Board, the state of Illinois had a roughly $10.5 billion handle in video gambling machines in 2022. Out of the total amount wagered, the respective income generated by the municipalities with the machines amounted to $135.5 million in tax revenue. The Board also reported that the state currently has more than 45,100 video gambling terminals across more than 8,200 venues.

Video gambling has been growing rapidly since it began in 2012, and competent state bodies have noted that the legalization of terminals would significantly increase video gaming revenues. The mayor candidates Paul Vallas and Brandon Johnson think the same and await the April 4 election to make the move.

Following two successful Checkpoint stops earlier this month in Tunica and the Bay Area, the RunGood Poker Series (RGPS) is headed to Florida for RGPS bestbet Jacksonville, which will take place March 23-April 2 and will culminate with the $1,200 buy-in Main Event with a $300,000 guarantee.

It’s been a busy month for the RGPS family, to say the least. The team walked away with the Best Mid-Major Tour/Circuit award at the Global Poker Awards for the third time and Hayley Hochstetler also received the award for Media Content: Best Photo for her work for PokerNews at the 2022 World Series of Poker (WSOP).

In addition to the two-day Main Event, which PokerNews will be on-site providing live updates for, RGPS bestbet Jacksonville will feature several No-Limit Hold’em and mixed game events that will leave the winners walking away from an RGPS Ring.

Check out the RGPS Hub on PokerNews here!

Bounty and Mixed Game Action

The RGPS bestbet Jacksonville stop will kick off with the $400 RunGood Series Opener, which offers a $100,000 guaranteed prize pool and offers six starting flights. Day 2 of the Series Opener will be live-streamed on bestbet LIVE on Twitch and YouTube.

After that, the $400 Black Chip Bounty will get underway, followed by a $300 One Day NLH Ring Event and a $200 Ambassador Bounty Ring Event, which will also be streamed on bestbet LIVE. Who Will Be the Next RGPS Main Event Winner?

But we start our regular report on the best new online slots of the week with a Hacksaw Gaming release: Stormforged. This sumptuous Norse-themed slot boasts expanding wild portals and two exciting bonus features. Are you ready to venture to fiery Muspelheim?

We head into the farmer’s field next with Rabbit Royale from ELK Studios. Win up to 2,500,000.00 as you collect carrots and trigger walking wilds.

Pop O’Gold is the latest Avatar UX game in the Popwins range. Experience the StickyPop mechanic and enjoy enchanted bonuses in a high-variance slot with an Irish vibe.

Finally, we round off our look at the best new online slots of the week with Cobra King from Rival Gaming. This exotic trip to the East features some incredible graphics, plus a free spins bonus with 20 games up for grabs.

Remember, you can test out all these great new online slots for free, right here at VegasSlotsOnline. Click on the links below to get started.

Venture into a world of Norse mythology with Hacksaw Gaming’s Stormforged slot. Open the expanding portals or trigger Storm Reels to reveal new prize multipliers!

We’re always hopeful that new Norse-themed slots can introduce something new to the slots market. In Stormforged, Hacksaw Gaming may have launched a game to give Vikings Go Berserk a run for its money.

In Norse mythology, Muspelheim was ruled over by the evil fire giants. The king of the giants, Surtur, appears as a scatter in the game. It activates a portal to Muspelheim whenever Surtur lands on the reels. Portals act as wilds that substitute for all regular symbols in the game.

In addition, the Hand of Surtur may tear a wild to reveal a prize multiplier. Multipliers range from 2x up to 200x. Surtur’s hand can also tear through treasure chests that make an appearance on the reels. The chest will split open to reveal a cash prize worth anywhere from 5x–2500x stake.

The Surtur scatter triggers free spins in the game if you land 3–5 in any position. You win 10–14 free spins, while sticky wilds can land on the reels to enhance your payouts.

Look out too for the Ice Brand scatter, which opens a portal to Midgard, and a path to wild payouts. You may also retrigger free spins by landing extra scatters on the reels.

Vikings make a welcome appearance in Stormforged too. You win 10–14 free spins by landing three or more Viking scatters. Plus, the Hammer of Thor scatter can appear to turn one reel wild. The wild ‘Storm Reel’ can add multipliers worth 2x to 200x.

An RTP of 96.14% and some great bonus action: no wonder Stormforged is a hit in the VSO offices. Give it a spin for free today.

Are you ready to take on the cyborg bunnies in Rabbit Royale from ELK Studios? Activate rabbit respins or trigger free spins with sticky rabbit wilds!

ELK Studios were easily one of our favorite developers of 2021 and 2022, with exciting releases such as Nitropolis 3 and 4. The Swedish slots manufacturer is going back to rabbits for its latest release, and this game is sure to be a winner with ELK fans.

Rabbit Royale is a five-reel online slot where sticky rabbits and free spins are the name of the game. But first, there are wilds to check out.

Every wild that contributes to a winning spin turns into a carrot with a random prize value attached. Rabbits collect the values of the carrots, then trigger a respin. Rabbits then move positions and may trigger more respins. You collect the total prize cash displayed when there are no more respins.

You can also trigger 3–5 free spins by landing 3–5 bonus symbols anywhere. Plus, you may activate 1–3 rabbits during your first free game. However, you can never have more than five rabbits in view at any one time.

The bonus features are just part of the draw of Rabbit Royale. The graphics, atmosphere, and music all make up for another superb ELK Studios release. If you loved the Nitropolis range of slots, you’re bound to love Rabbit Royale. Give it a play for free today.

Summon the luck of the Irish with Pop O’Gold from Avatar UX. Trigger the Stickypop feature and watch symbols turn sticky to activate cash wins!

Pop O'Gold slot reels by Avatar UX

It’s been a while since we featured Avatar UX in our report on the best new online slots of the week. But with Boosted Reels, split symbols, and the exciting Stickypop feature, Pop O’Gold has been worth the wait.

You’ll love Pop O’Gold if you’re a fan of multiway slots that can change on each spin. You being with 486 ways to win. However, the reels “pop” after every winning spin and grow to create new ways to win.

It’s possible to create up to 16,807 ways to win if you expand the reels to full height. Plus, winning symbols become sticky and remain in place for a free re-spin, while a multiplier is applied to the payout. Stickypop ends when there are no more consecutive winning spins.

Look out for some random boosters during the main game, too. There is a random chance at the beginning of every spin that two or more reels will boost to include split multipliers. You may boost up to five reels in this way.

You may trigger five free spins by hitting three or more scatters in any position. However, you have the option to gamble your spins up to a maximum of 12.

Plus, you can unlock fully the free spins bonus by growing the reels to their maximum height. A 2x multiplier is applied across the board, and this grows by +x1 for every winning spin to hit until the end of the feature.

Looking for some hot, new Irish-themed slots action? Look no further than our free-play version of Pop O’Gold, available here now.

Travel to the East in our final new online slot as you play Cobra King from Rival Gaming. Trigger Super Round Spins, but look out for magic lamps for even bigger bonus thrills.

Cobra King slot reels by Rival Gaming

Rival Gaming have established a firm reputation for no-nonsense slots with simple graphics and lots of bonus action. And in Cobra King, you certainly get more bonus bang for your buck.

This new Rival Gaming slot has a solid Arabian Nights vibe. There are magic carpets, minarets, and monkeys galore. You can even listen to the Arabesque music as you spin the reels.

You collect magic lamps on the reels as you play. These light up on a meter at the side of the screen. And once you collect 15 lamps, you progress to the next prize round.

Just like the classic Genie legend, this feature comes with three “wishes,” one for each “prize round.” For the first wish, the Cobra King himself appears as an expanding wild. He also brings a 3x multiplier for any wins he helps complete.

The Second Wish free spins features drop symbols with a 3x multiplier. Finally, the Third Wish free spins features sticky 3x wilds with a respin added.

You may trigger free spins by landing 3–5 genies on the reels at any time. You’ll win 10, 15, or 20 free games this way.

The beauty of the Cobra King meter is that it remains lit as long as you play the game. So, it can pay dividends to keep playing the slot until you trigger the First Wish bonus.

Cobra King may not score points for slick animation, but it certainly delivers on bonuses. Give it a spin for free and see what you think.

German Regulator Says Black Sports Wagering Market Less than 5%

Betway Receives Sportsbook License Extension for German Market

Germany’s new gambling regulator, the Gemeinsamen Glücksspielbehörde der Länder or GGL, issued a new report Thursday, explaining that licensed sports betting operators had a market share of more than 95% in 2022. This left a niche for black market operators of less than 5%, judging by analysis based on tax data released by the GGL.

Besides the overwhelming share of the licensed market, the watchdog reaffirmed its commitment to continue the fight against illegal gambling. According to Benjamin Schwanke, a Board member of the GGL, a primary focus for the regulator is the protection of customers and continuing the fight against illegal operators. Additionally, he said that the regulator could not “find any crowding out of legal offers by illegal offers.”

According to our market analysis, the channeling rate is well over 95 percent, which means that apart from less than five percent, the betting stakes are placed with the permitted sports betting providers according to the tax data of the Federal Ministry of Finance.

Ronald Benter, CEO of the GGL

The announcement by the gambling watchdog comes after a report released recently by the DSWV, a German sports betting association, claimed that the strict regulations have resulted in a decrease in the legal sports betting market in the country last year. The GGL explained that the DSWV backed its statement by claiming that there was “an increase in the illegal sports betting market.” However, the regulator said that its data disagrees with the claims made by the sports betting association.

Analysis of the tax data for 2022 shows that well over 95% of sports betting sales come from permitted providers,

reads a statement released by the GGL

The Watchdog Remains Vigilant

The regulator acknowledged that a 5% dip in the sports betting market was observed in 2022 when compared to 2021. This was, according to the Authority, an impact of the pandemic and the postponement of the European championship from 2020 to 2021. Still, the GGL said that the market position of 2022 matched the levels recorded pre-pandemic in 2019.

Details regarding the analysis of the legal sports betting market in 2022 come after the GGL issued its first fine for a gambling ad regulations breach. Earlier this week, the regulator confirmed it has implemented a five-figure fine against one operator who wasn’t named.

At the time of the announcement, the GGL said that it uncovered a licensed operator that advertised its services via a website offering illegal gambling services. As a result, the GGL issued a fine but did not confirm what was the exact amount and rather said only that it was a five-digit penalty.

Playboy’s Ethereum Bid Led to $4.9M in Losses

Playboy’s Ethereum Bid Led to $4.9M in Losses

PLBY Group, Playboy’s parent company, has lost $4.9 million because of the sharp declines across the cryptocurrency space. The company had sold its Rabbitars NFTs for Ethereum, which has now lost much of its value.

Playboy launched its NFT line in 2021 and accepted Ethereum as a payment method for the tokens. However, the price of Ethereum coins plummeted, resulting in big losses for the media company.

As reported, Playboy’s digital assets, valued at $1.75 million at the end of September 2022, have now declined to $327,000. The so-called crypto winter has greatly impacted the company’s decentralized currency portfolio.

The worst part for Playboy is that it accounts for its digital assets as “indefinite-lived intangible assets.” These are subject to impairment losses that cannot be recovered even if the price of the crypto tokens rises again.

As noted by the company, Ethereum coins’ price fluctuated heavily in 2022. Turbulent periods saw the coins rise and decline, with their lowest price being $964. However, the carrying value of each token the group held at the end of the reporting period reflects the lowest price of one Ethereum since its receipt.

Therefore, negative swings in the market price of Ethereum could have a material impact on the company’s earnings and carrying value, while only time a rise in prices will impact the company’s earnings positively, is when the Ethereum held in the balance sheet, are sold at a gain.

Playboy statement

Playboy’s Passion for Blockchain Did Not Pay Off

Playboy’s Rabbitar NFTs were launched in October 2021 when cryptocurrencies were still one of the hottest topics. Back then, few could have predicted the current state of the crypto market and Playboy was interested in exploring new monetization opportunities.

The Rabbitar line actually was not Playboy’s first venture into the world of blockchain as it had launched the so-called Liquid Summer collection earlier that same year. The Liquid Summer line was created in collaboration with the artist Slimesunday and featured photographs of Lenna Sjööblom, a famous Playboy model.

Playboy was interested in the crypto space far before minting the Liquid Summer collection. This was attested by its decision to allow customers to subscribe to Playboy TV via Bitcoin in 2018. Playboy eventually allowed customers to use Bitcoin payments on Playboy.com as well.

Despite its genuine interest in the crypto space, Playboy now has to deal with significant losses.

APAT Goes Fully International During 2023; Full Schedule Released

APAT Goes Fully International During 2023; Full Schedule Released

The Amateur Poker Association & Tour (APAT) has announced a bustling schedule of ten stops for 2023 coming off the back of a hugely successful APAT UK Team Championships event at Dusk Till Dawn, Nottingham. Not for the first time in APAT’s long and illustrious history, the amateur-focussed poker tour heads out of the United Kingdom during 2023, including trips to Ireland, Malta, and the Czech Republic.

APAT fans do not have long to wait to get their teeth into the next event because the APAT UK & Ireland Amateur Poker Championships takes place at Aspers Casino Stratford in London from March 24-26. Last year, 429 players turned out in force for the £120 buy-in Main Event, which ended in a three-way deal. When the dust had settled, Martin Kalinov was the last player standing, and he walked away with £5,000 of the £42,900 prize pool, plus a coveted APAT gold medal.

Irish Championships are Part of the 2023 Irish Open

A €250 buy-in APAT Irish National Championship event runs April 5-6, which should be massive, thanks to the tournament being slap-bang in the middle of the 2023 Irish Open festivities.

Players wanting a more international flavor should keep April 29-30 free because that is when the APAT Maltese Championship takes place. Again, all APAT events are popular, but this one is part of the 2023 Malta Poker Festival Spring Edition, meaning it is likely to draw in an even larger crowd than usual.

APAT returns to the Grand Casino Asch in the Czech Republic From September 27 to October 2 in what is likely to be the richest prize pool of the tour. The 2022 edition of the APAT German Amateur Poker Championship saw 624 players create a €65,520 prize pool, with €11,121 going to the eventual champion.

Scotsquad Claims APAT UK Team Championship Title

Dates are Set for the 2023 WCOAP

Every APAT player dreams of becoming a world champion in their field, and they have the chance to realize that dream in the 2023 World Championship Of Amateur Poker (WCOAP). Seen as the World Series of Poker (WSOP) for amateur players, the WCOAP is a must-play festival on the recreational player-friendly tour.

APAT is putting together the finishing touches to the 2023 WCOAP, which runs from August 23-28 at Dusk Till Dawn in Nottingham, but it will be phenomenal if past WCOAPs are anything to base judgment on. Dan Owston is the reigning champion, having topped a 423-strong field in 2022, an impressive result that came with £10,000 in prize money.

TNT Amusements Takes Torch Electronics to Court in Missouri

TNT Amusements Takes Torch Electronics to Court in Missouri

Torch Electronics, a company offering video slot machines across Missouri, has gotten itself into trouble as one of its competitors will be taking it to court. TNT Amusements, a local firm operating gaming machines, claims that Torch’s offerings are illegal and undermine its business.

TNT said that its profits have plummeted since its competitor started to illegally offer its products at amusement locations. As a result of Torch Electronics allegedly harming TNT’s profits, the latter company will seek damages equal to three times the money it lost.

Torch Electronics’ machines are available in many convenience stores and truck stops across Missouri, making them very accessible to customers. As a result, TNT has been losing customers to Torch, which allows players to gamble without going to casinos.

Under Missouri law, companies can only offer gambling at designated gambling locations. In addition, operators are required to have a license before providing games to local customers.

As a result, the legality of Torch’s offerings is very questionable, considering it doesn’t even have a license. This is not the first time it has been sued either as in 2019, TNT once again took action against its competitor. Back then, the former company requested the shutdown of Torch’s slots in a truck shop in Cuba city. However, not much was achieved.

Torch, on the other hand, claims that its offerings are completely legal since they (allegedly) do not constitute gambling. While Torch’s games are money games for sure, one aspect makes them somewhat different from traditional gambling machines. This aspect, the company highlights, is that its machines outright tell the player whether their next go will be a win or not.

Torch’s machines exploit the state’s definition of gambling to avoid trouble with the law. This clever tactic has allowed the company to further distribute machines across the state, much to the dismay of its traditional competitors.

Despite this exploitation of the rules, the Missouri Gaming Commission and many counties across the state still consider the machines to be illegal. Yet, cracking down on these machines on a state level has proved to be difficult, which is why Governor Mike Parson said that local county prosecutors should decide how to proceed.

TNT’s lawsuit against Torch Electronics comes several days after a class action lawsuit was filed against the latter company in Missouri’s Western District Court. According to the prosecution, Torch is guilty of federal racketeering and state consumer protection law violations.

Here’s How Much Math You REALLY Need to Succeed at Poker

Here's How Much Math You REALLY Need to Succeed at Poker

It’s long been a myth that you need to be a math whizz to be a big winner at poker. You don’t need to have a poker odds calculator in your head, to have memorized an endless list of combinations, or exactly know what ‘ICM’ stands for.

While it’s true that most poker players will need to know a little math to help them succeed, you don’t necessarily need to be a math prodigy to win at the tables.

WPT Global even wrote a recent blog article which we’re summarised here.

Give it a read and apply some of the theories while you’re at the table, and you may see an upturn in results!

Math and Poker

It’s not just a 21st-century idea that succeeding at poker should involve math. Back in 1875 there were poker books being written, including ‘The Game of Draw Poker, Mathematically Illustrated’ by Henry T. Winterblossom.

Even classic strategy books from Doyle Brunson or Mike Caro have broken down the math in popular games such as 5-Card Draw, Seven Card Stud and of course Texas Hold’em.

Modern-day poker math has been increasingly applied to poker tournaments as well as cash games, with ‘Harrington on Hold’em’ by Dan Harrington popularizing the “M” concept to reflect how shallow or deep a poker player’s stack is.

Key Poker Calculations

There are several simple calculations that poker players should have at their disposal at the poker tables, and here we break down three key ones:

EV (Expected Value)

You may have heard the term “EV” while at the poker tables, but what does it mean? Basically, it is simply the amount of money you can expect to win or lose on average for each action you take.

The formula is: EV = (Win% * $Win) – (Lose% * $Lost)

For example, when you bet $100 into a $100 pot as a bluff, and there’s a 75% chance your opponent will fold, you can use EV to see if there is a positive outcome in the long run. Learning equations like the above can help you quantify precisely how profitable or unprofitable a certain action will be.

Break-Even Calculation

This calculation is important because it can tell you how often a particular play needs to work for it to break even. This can then be used to give you a rough idea of whether or not it will be profitable.

Again, here is the formula: Break-even = Bet Size / (Bet Size + Current Pot)

Thinking of bluffing the river? Just input the bet size and the current pot to see whether it’s a good idea after all.

Minimum Defence Frequency (MDF)

Balance is the key in all forms of poker, whether with your overall bankroll or with value bets, bluffs, and ranges. The Minimum Defence Frequency (MDF) is the minimum percentage of your range that you need to call for your opponent’s bet not to be automatically profitable.

The formula: MDF = (pot size / (pot size + bet size)) * 100

We use this to determine how often we need to call to stop ourselves from being exploited, and we can also use it to determine if we can automatically profit from a bet.

Luck vs. Skill

There’s no question that poker is a game of skill, but there are elements of luck. However, by having a solid understanding of the math behind poker, you will be able to increase your skill level in the game and better understand the role that luck has on your play.

By having a foundational knowledge of poker math, you are better equipped to analyze your hands to see if you’re getting unlucky or if you have leaks in your game. If you don’t have that solid foundation, it’s like you’re building your strategy on quicksand – eventually, it will all come crumbling down.
