The WSOPC Horseshoe Las Vegas $1,700 Main Event attracted 833 entries and offered up a $1,261,995 prize pool. The field was chock full of Las Vegas crushers including Ryan Laplante (10th – $17,681), Chino Rheem (14th – $14,329), and Daniel Jones (24th – $8,165), just to name a few.

Similarly, there were a lot of familiar names at the final table including Bin Weng and Alex Foxen, who actually squared off in heads-up play. Eventually, Weng stopped the high roller juggernaut that is Foxen and wound up winning the tournament for $227,344 and his first gold ring.

“This tournament meant a lot to me,” said Wend, who recently won the Borgata Return Championship for a smooth $1 million. “I have won four or five titles, but never a WSOP tournament. Getting a ring means a lot to me, I’m kind of speechless right because I’m just so excited.”

He added: “Alex Foxen is one of my poker idols. We are originally from the same area, Long Island. I just feel so thankful to take this down and get the chance to play with Foxen. He is one of the best players right now.”

Betsoft Deepens Spanish Ties with Casino777, Codere NGR up 48%

Betsoft Deepens Spanish Ties with Casino777, Codere NGR up 48%

Betsoft, known the world over for its 3D slots hosted by endearing characters, has strengthened in presence in Spain with top-tier operator Casino777.es while Madrid (Alcobendas) based Codere Online is reporting Q4 and full-year results for 2022 were “better than expected” as negative cash flow continues to throttle its bottom line.

Betsoft, launched in 2008 presents an ever-expanding global footprint as it continues service in some unregulated markets such as the U.S. The company successfully completed two ISMS audits in 2020 – opening the door to operate in Spain as well as in the Latin American country of Colombia.

Solidifying Existing Spanish Footprint

In the last couple of years, it has inked deals with well-known and lesser-known Spanish operators including Paf, Tonybet, Retabet, and Versus. Its most recent distribution deal is with the tier-one operator, Casino777.es.

Casino777.es is owned and operated by Digital Distribution Management Ibérica, and licensed by the DGOJ (Dirección General de Ordenación de Juego) since its launch in 2015. Some of the operator’s claims to fame include top-notch customer service, an efficient payment system, a progressive games portfolio, and ongoing promotions.

In addition to a casino component including live dealer games, the site also offers full-service sports betting.

While Betsoft has successfully integrated its games around the world, it’s gone a step further to better serve the Spanish market by translating some of its most popular games into Spanish. Take the Kingdom, Return to Paris, and Thai Blossoms are among the translated titles.

The Spanish iGaming market is significant for us and one we take very seriously,” said Betsoft Gaming head of account management Anastasia Bauer. “We are delighted to be partnering with Casino777.es as they are a key operator in the country. We are looking forward to a successful relationship.”

Casino777.es manager for Spain, César Paredes García added: “We are very much an experiential operator. Delivering first-class entertainment is our core skill and so working with providers of Betsoft’s caliber is essential for us going forward. We anticipate a very positive future relationship.”

Codere Online Revenue Up, Still Bleeding Cash

Luxembourg-owned and Madrid-headquartered Codere Online has reported “better than expected” fourth-quarter results with the entire year of 2022 bringing in net gaming revenue of €122.9m – 48% more than the prior year. Unfortunately, the Grupo Codere subsidiary experienced a negative cash flow of €46.m.

Outgoing CEO of the online Spanish-language operator, Moshe Edree commented: “We are reporting better than expected Q4 and full year 2022 performance. This success is a testament to our team’s dedication and focus on delivering an unparalleled online gaming experience for our customers.”

Edree handed the reigns of the online division to COO, Aviv Sher on March 1 but will stay on as executive vice-chairman of the board.

Edree focused on net gaming revenue when he said the “effectiveness of our growth strategy and our ability to successfully deploy marketing spend” across all of the company’s Spanish-speaking markets were responsible for the successful NGR numbers.

We are pleased to have exceeded our 2022 net gaming revenue outlook of €115m to €120m and follow through on our commitment to investors,” added CFO Oscar Iglesias.

The company is in a constant state of improvement as it repositions itself for the present and the future. One such change just before the new year saw the company offload its Italian division.

Spain and Mexico Growth Markets

The company saw a 70% increase in NGR in the final quarter of the year with customers in Spain and Mexico contributing solidly. The increased revenue may be tied directly to marketing expenditures which more than doubled over 2021 numbers at €31.2m for 2022 – directly affecting both ends of the books.

While the subsidiary did see a net loss of €45.9m for the year, it was a major improvement over the prior year when it booked a loss of €68.0m in 2021.

The company projects a continued narrowing of losses estimated to be no more than -€30m for 2023 with net revenue of no less than €140m.

Codere Online will establish an important presence in Argentina in the coming year with a planned launch in Córdoba as it continues its pursuit of licenses in Mendoza and Buenos Aires.

We continue to be very excited about the future and the opportunities that lie ahead, particularly in Argentina, where we are making significant progress towards starting operations in several new regions this year,” Iglesias said. “We are confident in our ability to execute on our plans and continue delivering sustainable growth for our shareholders.”

IGT President of iGaming Gil Rotem Speaks With VSO News

Gil Rotem

Separately, IGT and iSoftBet have been creating some of the best slots in the business for many years, but that’s all about to change. IGT completed its acquisition of iSoftBet in July 2022, meaning the two companies have now combined their exciting games into one portfolio under the IGT PlayDigital umbrella.

up to 200,704 win ways in one spin

One of their most recent slot releases, Cash Lab Megaways, made it into VegasSlotsOnline News’ Slots of the Week. It’s a science-themed game that offers six reels with a top tracker and lots of win ways. The game utilizes Max Megaways to give players a chance of covering up to 200,704 win ways in one spin.

VSO News caught up with Gil Rotem, president of iGaming for IGT, to find out a bit more about the game and how the purchase of iSoftBet will help propel the combined company forward.

Last year, IGT acquired iSoftBet. What effect has this had on the company?

The acquisition of iSoftBet had many benefits to IGT PlayDigital. In addition to expanding our talented team of employees, we more than doubled our portfolio of high-performing games, bringing the total to more than 225 titles.

We also inherited a world-class game aggregation platform. It offers operators a vast library of high-performing land-based games, innovative content, and business solutions via a single API integration. This also includes advanced analytics and player engagement resources such as a game recommendation tool, customizable widgets and reporting solutions, and enhanced jackpot features.

IGT PlayDigital has a history of innovative slots. What is the secret to creating such unique games so regularly?

First and foremost, we love what we do. We have very talented game designers who like creating compelling games with themes and mechanics that players enjoy. Knowing that not all players, just like not all operators, are interested in the same games, IGT PlayDigital ensures that we are analyzing data and creating market-attuned games specific to the players in that region.

converting top-performing land-based games into player-favorite digital games

IGT’s rich pedigree in land-based gaming has also helped successfully in converting top-performing land-based games into player-favorite digital games such as best performing Wheel of Fortune, Cleopatra, Cash Eruption, and others.

The latest of your slots to make it into our Slots of the Week is Cash Lab Megaways. Can you explain a bit about the game and what makes it different?

Cash Lab Megaways is a unique mix of the six-reel, two-tracker setup with the win potential offered with the Megaways engine. This game uses simple mechanics of matching wild symbols on trackers resulting in wild reels and multipliers, unlocking the power of the Megaways. With the addition of special bonus features and the exciting Megaways mechanic, the game gives players the opportunity to win big.

Cash Lab Megaways by IGT PlayDigital

What other exciting IGT PlayDigital games do you think our readers would enjoy?

We have a wide variety of proprietary game titles that have proven very popular among our customers and their players. Classic iSoftBet fan favorites like Gold Digger and Majestic Megaways highly complement IGT PlayDigital’s popular games such as Cash Eruption and Cleopatra.

a new three-game series inspired by Greek mythology

Other exciting games, which we recently featured at ICE London, were Cleopatra Grand, Cool Catch, Ice Heist, and Crabbin’ Crazy II. We also demonstrated a new three-game series inspired by Greek mythology: Olympus Zeus Megaways, Olympus Hades Megaways, and Olympus Raging Megaways.

What does 2023 have lined up for IGT PlayDigital?

We are on an exciting trajectory for the upcoming year and beyond. We are focused on launching new content, entering new markets, and maintaining our position as the leading B2B iGaming supplier in the US. IGT PlayDigital has a global presence in regulated jurisdictions around the globe, but with the acquisition of iSoftBet, we were able to enter new markets that we hadn’t operated in and deliver exciting new content.

Additionally, we have plans to launch a digital version of the highly successful land-based game Prosperity Link. We are also expecting to debut the first omnichannel wide area progressive game Wheel of Fortune Triple Gold Gold Spin in New Jersey in the first half of 2023.

As we are in the business of creating fun, we create exciting and entertaining player experiences that will position us as the number one supplier in all jurisdictions.

Sportsbet Acquired 48 Percent Market Share in 2022

Sportsbet Acquired 48 Percent Market Share in 2022

Sportsbet, a corporate bookmaker, claims to have maintained the leading position in the Australian sports betting market over the year 2022. The company says that it reached a market share of 48 % despite the falling stake and revenue figures throughout the year.

Revenue fell, and wagering increased:

According to figures reported at the end of the fiscal year 2022 by its UK-based parent company Flutter Entertainment, Sportsbet’s 2022 revenue fell by 2% on a year-on-year basis to £1.26 billion (US$1.51 billion). On the other hand, the number of average monthly users increased by 8% to settle at 1,090,000. Also, the user count hit a record in December, when around 1,300,000 customers wagered through the company’s sportsbooks representing almost a doubled average user figure in comparison to the pre-pandemic 4Q19.

”Challenging comparatives”:

Sportsbet said it took advantage of the favorable COVID-19 circumstances in the first half of the year, but the second half features some ”challenging comparatives,” such as the increased consumption tax settlement which enforcement from July induced an 11% fall in EBITDA to £390 million (US$466 million).

“As the clear market leader with over 48% of the Australian online sports-betting market, Sportsbet benefitted most from the retail to online migration during the Covid lockdown periods in 2020 and 2021, growing 1.4 times that of the online market,” said Sportsbet.

Reversed online engagement:

The company also said: “As retail and society fully reopened during 2022, AMP (average monthly player) growth was more than offset by the reversion of online player engagement from peak COVID levels and competitive intensity which stepped up significantly in 2022, particularly in Q4. This led to high levels of generosity with customers shopping around for the most generous offers.”

Solid grounds for further growth:

According to IAG, Sportsbet also said that the company made additional investments in sales and marketing activities during the fourth quarter to offset the increased tax expenses and the falling handle. These promotional efforts resulted in the increased monthly average players reaching their peak in December 2022. Such a development made solid grounds for the bookmaker to compensate for the lower handle over the H2 and set for further growth in 2023.

Sportsbet commented: “We are confident that the plans we have in place for 2023 are the right strategy to drive future growth over the medium term. We will do this through continuing to deliver product innovation and personalized generosity while leveraging our growing recreational customer base, unparalleled local scale, and long track record of growing through regulatory changes.”

Group’s revenue increased against the net loss:

The Australian bookmaker thus contributed to the increased revenues of the entire group. According to the financial report for the full year 2022, Flutter recorded a 27% revenue increase to £7.69 billion (US$9.19 billion) with EBITDA also growing by 27% to £918 million (US$ 1.1 billion). However, the severe operating circumstances in 2022 made the company nevertheless report a net loss after tax of £305 million (US$364 million).

Ocean Downs Casino Punter Wins $11K, Tops It with $100K Lotto Win

South Carolina Man Donates $150K Powerball Winnings

A common saying goes that “lightning never strikes the same place twice” but not for a 31-year-old woman from Maryland who managed to win big twice within less than 12 hours.

Pink Is the Lucky Number

A nursing assistant and a mother of four, the woman who wished to remain anonymous and played under the name of Chicklet31, first cashed out $11,000 from Ocean Downs Casino she had visited after her late night shift.

Having left the casino at around 1am, she decided to buy a scratch card ticket from the Maryland Lottery the next day and visited a local convenience store located in her hometown of Princess Anne around noon, where she opted for a pink-colored Extreme Cash game ticket, which later won her the top $100,000 prize.

Speaking to the Maryland Lottery, the woman explained why she had bought that ticket and there was not a single drop of logic in it. “I just bought that scratch-off because it stood out to me and pink is my favorite color,” she stated.

She even joked that her luck was due to the same set of clothes she had been wearing in the casino and while purchasing the instant scratch card.

“‘Chicklet’ becomes the 60th top-prize winner in the $100,000 Extreme Cash scratch-off game and is the game’s third top-prize winner in the last two weeks,” Maryland Lottery officials stated, adding that the convenience store where the winning ticket was sold would receive a $1,000 bonus.

Chicklet is planning to use the unexpected windfall to visit her son who lives in China and to further her education so that she could advance in her professional career.

Other Recent Multiple Wins

The Maryland Lottery was involved with another double-win in the state scored by a 56-year-old Amazon employee from Baltimore who managed to win big twice within just two months.

In February, the lucky scratch card player won the top $50,000 prize available from the $5 scratch card game Crazy 8s, to boost his January winnings of $30,000 from the same $5 scratch card lottery game.

And while multiple wins in a row are rare but not unheard of, what did a Vietnam veteran of Fall River, 50 miles south of Boston, Massachusetts, would probably never happen again.

In December, the man decided to buy not one but six Lucky for Life tickets with the exact same combination of numbers, won a cash prize of $390,000 from each, and received nearly $2 million in one lump sum from five of the tickets while leaving one ticket to pay him $25,000 in twenty annual payments.

Kim Kardashian Took Home $250k in Cash After Baccarat Session Staked By Disgraced Businessman

Kim Kardashian

Just another night in Las Vegas

Several celebrities, including Leonardo DiCaprio and Kim Kardashian, have been questioned by the FBI in relation to its investigation into disgraced Malaysian financier Jho Low. A report published by Bloomberg Businessweek on Thursday reveals some of the details of those conversations.

When speaking to the FBI, Kardashian described a night she spent in 2019 playing baccarat in Las Vegas with Low. She was with a group in a private baccarat room until after 5am. At one point, Kardashian got ready to leave, but one of her friends instructed her to remain as he had “heard stories of Low giving people chips at the end of the night.”

he told her she could keep the winnings

Kardashian ended up staying at the table using casino chips that Low had staked. She then hit it big in the baccarat game, but when she attempted to give the chips back to Low at the end of the session, he told her she could keep the winnings.

Big money

The reality television star went to the cashier cage and discovered that she had $350,000 in chips. She was then given a “trash bag full of one hundred dollar bills” worth $250,000. Kardashian put the trash bag stuffed with cash into her carry-on luggage when she flew back to Los Angeles.

Kardashian first encountered Low in 2009 when he paid her $50,000 to appear at his birthday party in a Las Vegas nightclub.

During another gambling session in Las Vegas with Low, Kardashian reportedly won and kept $100,000 in cash. The Bloomberg Businessweek report did not name the casino or casinos where the gambling took place, though a Venetian marketing executive alleged last year that Low had wagered $87m at the baccarat tables at the Venetian resort.

An alleged fraudster

Jho Low appeared on the radar of the FBI as a result of fraud allegations in which he is alleged to have embezzled millions from the 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) government fund. While Low did not have an official position within the fund, the US authorities believe that he was the mastermind behind the fraud scheme. Low is currently an international fugitive.

The 1MDB fund was started in 2009 and was headed by Malaysia’s prime minister at the time, Najib Razak. Razak was accused in 2015 of embezzling $700m from the fund and transferring the money into his own bank account. He was sentenced in 2018 to 12 years in prison.

reputation for partying in Las Vegas with celebrities

Low had a reputation for partying in Las Vegas with celebrities, as well as spending big money on art and real estate. He was even said to be the main financial backer for The Wolf of Wall Street blockbuster film that starred Leonardo DiCaprio. If it is proven that the money Kardashian received from Low was stolen, she might have to hand it over to the authorities.

Kentucky Clears House Bill Banning Video Game Machines with Cash Payouts

Kentucky Clears House Bill Banning Video Game Machines with Cash Payouts

According to the Louisville Courier Journal, Rep. Killian Timoney’s House Bill (HB) 594 that would ban “gray” gaming machines in the Bluegrass State passed through a House committee with 13 “yes” votes and 7 “no” votes on Thursday evening.

At the end of an hour-long, heated debate that reunited fervent members of the Kentuckians Against Illegal Gambling (KAIG) group and the Merchants and Amusement Coalition group, the much-anticipated committee substitute for HB Bill 594 was given the green light.

What Does This Mean for Kentucky?

The bill was introduced to the Committee on Committees on February 22 and had its first reading two days later, then returned to the Committee of Committees from where it was sent to the Licensing, Occupations, and Administrative Regulations Committee on February 28.

On March 3, its second reading took place, then the bill returned to the Licensing, Occupations, & Administrative Regulations Committee.

In the summary of the bill’s original version, Timoney’s asked for the amendment of KRS 528.010 to define terms like “coin-operated amusement machine,” “skill game,” “skill,” “skill-based contests,” as well as the definitions of terms like “gambling,” “advancing gambling activity,” “gambling device,” and “something of value.”

The bill also asked for the amendment of KRS 528.100 to “authorize the Attorney General, the Commonwealth’s attorney for any locality, or the county attorney for any locality” to set up a civil penalty that would not go over the $25,000 mark for each device for any individual who “conducts, finances, manages, supervises, directs, or owns” such a device, which be a direct violation of KRS Chapter 528.

More specifically, all individuals who will continue to offer games produced by Pace-O-Matic, Prominent Technologies, and other similar providers at the end of the deadline they have been given to shut down their activities will risk a fine of up to $25,000.

Timoney also noted that the amended version of the bill would not impose a ban on popular games at state and county fairs or businesses including Dave & Buster’s and Chuck E. Cheese which are known to offer prizes to participants.

The Ban Would Hurt Small Businesses, Say Opponents

Over the past years, video games with cash payouts have increased in the number of locations throughout the state, including clubs, bars, and gas stations.

While their opponents claim these machines are an expanded form of illegal gambling, supporters of the same games which they called “skill games” claim the ban would destabilize small businesses that are currently relying on the income generated by players.

KAIG’s executive director Mark Guilfoyle stated that provided the legislation would not be passed to put a ban on these games, their number could grow to as many as 50,000 in the state, potentially leading to more violent crimes and a rise of “mini-casinos popping up on every street corner” across the state.

Pace-O-Matic spokesman Mike Barley described the legislation as one that is “picking winners and losers” in the context of Churchill Downs’ growing profits being supported by the slots installed at its HHR facilities.

Bob Heleringer, a supporter of skill games maker Prominent Technologies explained the horse racing industry wishes to “crush” small businesses and set the grounds for a monopoly in the industry.

At the end of the Kentucky General Assembly, Timoney said the bill had not only achieved majority support within the 80-member GOP supermajority but also gathered sufficient votes within his party for the bill to pass the chamber and reach the Senate.

In February, Rep. Michael Meredith filed House Bill 551 in a new attempt to see sports betting be legalized in the state.
