Inter Miami Ready for Another Big Performance

Phil Neville’s boys started the 2023 MLS season with a 2-0 win over CF Montreal at home. It was a nice performance by the Floridians, especially knowing that the team from Canada can be very tricky sometimes. Nevertheless, Inter won the game thanks to the goals scored by their newcomer Sergiy Kryvtsov and Philadelphia Union product Shanyder Borgelin.

Kryvtsov had a great debut – not only did the former Shakhtar Donetsk defender score but he also helped protect Inter Miami’s net throughout the game. He’s one of the best signings this club made during the offseason, but one could argue that the very best signing is Josef Martinez.

Even though the Venezuelan had a quiet game last weekend, he remains one of the best forwards in the league.

Philadelphia Union Look Good as Usual

The boys from Philly destroyed Columbus Crew 4-1 in the first round of the season. Daniel Gazdag scored two penalties and recorded two assists that day. The other two goals were the work of Julian Carranza. Both of these guys were crucial last season when Philadelphia Union went all the way to the MLS Cup Final.

They’re still in their 20s, so one may argue that they still haven’t reached their prime. Maybe the 2023 season is when they really get to shine?

Philly’s fans will be glad to learn that it’s not just about those two. This team is packed with talented players, with at least one decent option for every position on the pitch.

Inter Miami vs Philadelphia Union Prediction

The last time these two met, Philly won 2-1 on the road. We suspect that something similar might happen this Saturday as well. Philadelphia Union are simply the better team, but we do think Inter Miami will give them a run for their money.

Pick: Philadelphia Union to win & over 2.5 goals

Penn Entertainment Still Hasn’t Ruled Out Selling Barstool

Penn Entertainment Still Hasn’t Ruled Out Selling Barstool

Popular north American operator and provider of integrated entertainment, casino and sports experiences, Penn Entertainment, acquired some 36% stake in Barstool Sports, a leading sports website and digital media, in a deal for $163 million. This happened back in February 2020.

Then, last month, three years after the initial interest acquisition, Penn acquired the remaining 64% interest in Barstool Sports. To acquire the remaining interest, the company paid some $388 million. This means that Penn paid approximately $500 million to acquire in full Barstool Sports.

We are extremely pleased to welcome Barstool Sports fully into the Penn Entertainment family.”

Jay Snowden, CEO and president of Penn Entertainment

At the time of the announcement, Jay Snowden, Penn Entertainment’s CEO and president, said that the company is excited to see Barstool Sports join “the Penn Entertainment family.” He outlined that the digital media and sports website is trusted and proven within the sports vertical. Additionally, Snowden acknowledged that the acquisition brings new growth opportunities for Penn and complements the company’s interactive division.

While undoubtedly, the acquisition is expected to bring benefits for Penn Entertainment, a report suggests that a resale of Barstool Sports may bring greater value for the company’s stakeholders. Lloyd Danzig, Sharp Alpha Advisors’ managing partner, was recently interviewed by John Wall Street.

He explained that Penn paid some $525 million for the complete interest in Barstool Sports. This, according to Danzig and analysts in the industry, was a good deal, considering that the Barstool Sports’ was estimated to be worth about $800 million to $1 billion.

They’ll have paid roughly $525 million in total consideration for an asset that most analysts seem to think is worth anywhere from $800 million to $1 billion.

Lloyd Danzig managing partner at Sharp Alpha Advisors

Chris Grove, Acies Investments’ co-founding partner, added that in case there is a gap between the value of the betting brand and the media brand of Barstool, a potential sale of those assets may be possible. According to the co-founding partner, such a sale can deliver great value for Penn Entertainment’s shareholders.

If a big enough gap opens up between the value of Barstool the media brand and Barstool the betting brand, Penn could find themselves in a spot where selling Barstool and licensing back the brand for betting creates the greatest value for shareholders.

Chris Grove, co-founding partner at Acies Investments

This, in turn, can propel the company to its next level of growth. Still, it’s important to mention that Penn hasn’t confirmed it has such an intention, at least for the moment.

Nepomniachtch Wins Big as Boosted PartyPoker Sunday Party Hits GTE

Nepomniachtch Wins Big as Boosted PartyPoker Sunday Party Hits GTE

The $109 buy-in Sunday Party is the new flagship weekly tournament at PartyPoker, and has been since its launch in February when PartyPoker revamped its online poker tournament schedule. The Sunday Party hit its $150,000 guarantee during its first week, but then saw an overlay in the following two weeks. PartyPoker decided to boost the guarantee to $200,000 on February 26 despite those overlays, and was rewarded by 2,014 players turning out, and creating a $201,400 prize pool! Build it and they shall come, as they say.

The top 351 finishers won a slice of $107,000 from the main prize pool, with the remaining $107,000 divided up and placed on the heads of each entrant in the form of a progressive bounty. Although the initial amount won from bounties was only $25, those payments swelled at the final table to such a degree that only two finalists banked less than $1,000 from the bounty prize pool, while the champion took home a five-figure haul worth of bounties alone.

“CanYouFold” was the final table’s first casualty. Their ninth-place finish came with a prize weighing in at $1,966 in total. “Paspalho” ($2,421), and “Scoobyduuu” ($2,930) bowed out, which left the final table six-handed.

The final six became five when “A222C7600E” ($2,891) crashed out, then four when “AyyKaramba,” ($5,414) a possible fan of The Simpsons, saw their stack slide to an opponent’s. “Emaxxi” ($5,385), and “Vittor_R0d” ($8,170) crashed and burned, leaving only two players in the hunt for the title of $200,000 Sunday Party champion.

Both of the heads-up players locked in almost $11,000 from the main prize pool, but the final bounty payment was worth more than $13,000, leaving everything very much to play for. Eventually, “Nepomniachtch” defeated “Takafogonela” in the one-on-one battle, and reeled in a total prize worth $23,999, leaving the runner-up to pad their bankroll with $13,634.

What PKO Tournaments Can You Play at PartyPoker For Less Than $5?

9 CanYouFold $881 $1,085 $1,966

The Sunday Party’s guarantee returns to $150,000 on March 5, yet it is still superb value. Satellites from only $0.01 mean the field is packed with amateur and recreational players taking a shot at the big time. Will you be one of them?

Spakman0888 Secures Sunday Carnival Top Honors

Sunday Carvival

The Sunday Carnival was another Sunday major that PartyPoker increased the guarantee of, boosting the usual $50,000 to $75,000, which is a pretty fantastic prize pool for a $22 buy-in. Some 3,436 players bought in, resulting in an overlay of just under $6,300, a valiant attempt indeed.

Team PartyPoker’s Jaime “jaimestaples” Staples was among the in-the-money finishers. The popular Canadian bowed out in 271st place for a combined score worth $54. Had Staples navigated his way to the final table, he would have taken home at least $552 for his efforts.

Delving Into PartyPoker’s Trio of New Weekend Majors

“AKA-4777” ($552), and “suerteloka” ($736) were the only finalists to not see their PartyPoker accounts increase by four figures. “LuckyVenom” ($1,064), “emiledel69” ($1,224), and “EscravoDoPipos” ($1,829) fell short of glory, but will likely be taking another shot at the Sunday Carnival in the coming weeks having multiplied their initial investment several times over.

“loverboybr” ($2,088) and “JonSlowroll” ($3,244) fell by the wayside, leaving “Spakman0888” heads-up against “d1bg”. It was the former that got their hands on the title, and a total haul worth $7,154. The player that fell at the final hurdle received $4,743, giving them plenty of ammunition for their future endeavors.

‘Powerful evidence’ of online gambling harm, federal parliamentary inquiry head says | Gambling

Broadcasters, sporting codes and betting companies should expect more restrictions on gambling advertisements and promotions, after the head of parliamentary inquiry cited “powerful evidence” of harmful practices.

The inquiry into online gambling harm, led by Labor MP Peta Murphy, has now received almost 150 submissions from organisations involved in sports betting and held multiple hearings. It will inform any regulatory action taken by the federal government, amid concerns the $50bn industry is causing undue harm.

“It is absolutely clear that it is not just community members who are concerned about the proliferation of sports betting advertisements and the increasing engagement of young people in sports betting,” Murphy, the chair of standing committee on social policy and legal affairs, said.

“We have heard from a lot of public health experts, academics, researchers and support services and the evidence is pointing to harm from gambling being something that exists for online betting as well as the more traditional, land-based gambling that we’re all aware of.”

The peak bodies for free-to-air TV and radio broadcasters have argued current advertising restrictions are appropriate and that further regulation could lead to a reduction in free sport coverage, due to a decline in revenue from gambling contracts. The peak body for major sporting groups has issued a similar warning, saying funding to grassroots sport could decline.

Those claims were rejected by Murphy, who questioned why broadcasters would not cut other expenses and why sporting codes would not invest in the development of their games.

“I have invited those organisation to familiarise themselves with the other evidence that we are receiving from experts and to take into account community views and expectations around advertising,” Murphy said.

“The suggestion that the current regime is absolutely perfect is not supported by what we are hearing from community members or experts in the gambling space.”

Last year, the Victorian Responsible Gambling Foundation reported an average of 148 gambling ads were broadcast between 6pm and 8.30pm every weeknight on free-to-air TV. That figure is disputed by Free TV Australia.

Complaints to the Australian Communications and Media Authority (Acma) almost doubled last financial year, with the regulator warning current restrictions are failing to meet community expectations.

This week, the ACT attorney general, Shane Rattenbury, added to growing calls for regulation, telling the inquiry he would support a near complete ban on sports betting advertising. The South Australian government has also called for a ban to be considered while the NSW, Queensland and Tasmanian governments believe the current rules are too weak.

Murphy said she was distressed by evidence from one addict on the self-exclusion register, who told the inquiry that he was targeted with promotional material including “matched bet offers” to encourage him back to gambling.

skip past newsletter promotion

“The evidence from people who have a gambling addiction or have experienced harm from gambling and the impact that’s had on them and their families, it has been impossible to listen to them and not be disturbed but also impressed by their courage in coming forward,” Murphy said.

“When you hear someone say how that has affected them, as someone who is trying to stop gambling, it’s pretty powerful evidence.”

The inquiry will make recommendations to government in coming months and, while Murphy would not pre-empt that process, she said it was clear the committee would look at improving the gambling industry.

Murphy also said the current Northern Territory-led self-exclusion scheme was not working, citing recent examples of companies sending promotions to gambling addicts who wanted to be left alone.

“Betting companies are obtaining the details of people who have never opened accounts with those companies,” Murphy said.

MGM Resorts Runs the Most Profitable Property Outside of Las Vegas

MGM Resorts Runs the Most Profitable Property Outside of Las Vegas

One such company is MGM Resorts International which owns the MGM National Harbor in Oxon Hill, Maryland. The gross gaming revenue generated by the property in 2022 was enough to place it as the most profitable casino outside of Nevada.

Regional Casinos Caught in an (Un)fair Race

National Harbor, which services both Maryland and Washington, DC, has been able to leapfrog over other properties such as Resorts World New York in Queens, securing a small but sufficient advantage to win it the accolade.

The news was confirmed by the American Gaming Association (AGA) which keeps stock of such developments in the commercial gaming market in the United States. The statement said:

At the property level, MGM National Harbor in Maryland narrowly surpassed Resorts World New York City in Queens, New York as the highest grossing commercial casino in terms of gaming revenue outside of Nevada.

American Gaming Association

The results included both sports betting and gaming operations, which is what drove the results for the Maryland property whereas Resorts World New York City is still not offering sports gambling which has put it at a disadvantage.

Presently, MGM is happy to operate the brand and day-to-day whereas VICI Properties is the owner of the property. MGM Resorts International runs a number of highly-grossing venues across the United States, including in places such as Massachusetts, Ohio, Mississippi, and New Jersey to name a few.

MGM Dominates Regional Casino Revenue and Results

MGM also maintains an unfaltering presence on the Strip where the property stands tall with brands such as Cosmopolitan, Bellagio, and Aria. The company’s been packing a powerful punch and in 2022, four of the eight top-grossing regional casinos were actually MGM properties which demonstrates the company’s ability to drive successful results across the board and in different market conditions.

The Empire City in Yonkers, New York, Borgata in Atlantic City, New Jersey, and the MGM Grand Detroit in Michigan all joined the National Harbor as some of the top-grossing regional casinos based on AGA’s list for 2022. Other venues on the list include properties by Hard Rock, Rivers and Caesars Entertainment, but none of these casinos quite measures up to MGM’s presence which gives the latter brand a strong base of operation to grow.

Last year’s edition set the record for the largest prize pool ever offered in the history of the Golden Nugget, a record that could very well be beaten this summer given the $1,100 buy-in tournament is now being offered in the popular Mystery Bounty format. More on that below!

Here’s Everything You Need to Know about Poker at the Golden Nugget!

A Look At the Schedule

Last year, the Golden Nugget’s Grand Poker Series catered to 18,209 entrants and awarded $4,532,670 in prize money over its 81 events. This year is likely to be even bigger and better!

The series will kick off with four tournaments on Tuesday, May 30 including the $300 buy-in Event #1: $10,000 Omaha Hi/Low 8 or Better at 11 a.m. local time. That day will also mark the first $150 buy-in, $10K GTD Daily Deep Stack NLH at 1 p.m., and $130 buy-in Nightly NLH at 7 p.m. While those two events won’t run every single day, they are both a staple on the 2023 Grand Poker Series schedule.

The $200 buy-in Event #10: $200,000 GTD NLH will hold nine starting flights from Thursday, June 1 through Saturday, June 3 with flights starting at 11 a.m., 1 p.m., and 7 p.m. each of those days. The surviving players from each tournament will return at Noon on Sunday, June 4 for Day 2 action.

Poker fans will be excited to know the Bar Poker Open is returning to the Golden Nugget with their annual invitational which will run Monday, June 12 through Thursday, June 15. The final table of that tournament will be live-streamed. Also, on that Thursday, the Bar Poker Open Pro-Am, a $1,000 buy-in event, will take place.

For fans of Mystery Bounties, a $300 buy-in, $250K GTD Mystery Bounty event will run Friday, June 16 through Monday, June 19. That tournament will offer a total of nine starting flights with three a day at 11 a.m., 3 p.m., and 7 p.m.

The 2023 Grand Poker Series Championship Event once again costs $600 to enter and boasts a $500,000 guarantee. That tournament will have three starting flights at 11 a.m. each day from June 23-25, with survivors from each returning at Noon on Monday, June 26 to play down to a winner.

All tournaments will be one-day events except for 10, 28, 32, 38, 41, 59, and 78

In 2022, the inaugural PokerNews Cup at Golden Nugget attracted 1,245 entries and surpassed the $1 million guarantee by creating a $1,207,650 prize pool, the largest-ever in the Golden Nugget’s 76-year history.

At the end of the five days of action, the winner of the $202,725 grand prize was Gary Gelman of Brooklyn, New York. Gelman wore a Ukrainian flag draped around him throughout the final table and he was asked to expand on that after his win.

Gary Gelman
Gary Gelman, the 2022 PokerNews Cup champ at Golden Nugget

“It is special to me. I was born in Ukraine, I lived there with my parents when I was a kid. I also married a Ukrainian a few years ago. It has been real hard these last few months. We were actually in Kiev in February when the war started. We had to make our way out and we brought her mother back with us.”

He continued, “When I made the final table I thought I would represent and luckily one of my friends on the rail had a flag and I decided to wear it today.”

Will New York’s Sportsbook Advertising Regulations End the Marketing War?

Boy watching static on TV

Sportsbook advertising regulations

Recent regulations on sportsbook advertisements may have doused the flaming rivalry for control of the market—at least for the moment.

New York became the latest state to act in an area that has troubled many nationwide and worldwide, enacting regulations on Monday that prohibit marketing to underage individuals. Many other states, both with and without legal sports betting, have discussed advertising regulations ad nauseam for the same reasons playing out in the Big Apple.

restricting advertisements may be a necessary evil

As sports betting continues to explode worldwide, so does the push for greater control over its pervasiveness. Restricting advertisements may be a necessary evil for the prosperity of the industry.

A growing issue

In 2021, American Gaming Association (AGA) President Bill Miller called the growth of sports betting ads and competition for marketplace dominance “an unsustainable arms race.”

DraftKings, for example, spent $345m on sales and marketing in the fourth quarter of 2022. It also projected adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) of negative $475m-$575m for 2023.

Part of the massive company spend came on advertising through mediums such as television, social media, and partnerships, usually with popular figures in the sports world. In 2022, since-shuttered gambling company MaximBet made history by becoming the first betting company to partner with an active MLB player, Charlie Blackmon.

While the extra visibility may help drive companies’ growth, it has also created problems. Underage people and college students have been exposed to the world of gambling and see it as a way to get rich overnight without having the financial literacy to know the risks that often come with gambling.

roughly one in five adults had bet on sports in the past year

A 2022 Pew Research poll found that roughly one in five adults had bet on sports in the past year. More data from as far back as 2018 revealed that around 75% of students had gambled in some form, including casual wagers with friends.

At-risk persons, especially those who have been treated for gambling and addiction problems, are also being presented with an easy relapse. That has been another key issue for lawmakers in states with and without gambling markets in their debates over legalizing sports betting.

Big money, big changes

The Federal Trade Commission mandates that “claims in advertisements must be truthful, cannot be deceptive or unfair, and must be evidence-based.” That has been the basis for sportsbooks being forced to abandon terms such as “free bets” and “risk-free bets” for replacements like “bonus bets” and “bet credits.”

Regardless of the advertisements’ packaging, over $60bn was bet on sports in America in 2022, per the AGA. That represents a higher GDP than 62.6% of the countries in the world.

called for a permanent ban on all online and electronic sportsbook advertising

One of the main figures attempting to quell the sports betting explosion is New York Congressman Paul D. Tonko. Three days before Super Bowl LVII on February 12, he introduced the Betting on our Future Act, modeled after the Federal Cigarette Labeling and Advertising Act, calling for a permanent ban on all online and electronic sportsbook advertising.

It is unlikely that something as drastic as a blackout for sports betting companies will happen, but it does show the disapproval with the way sports betting advertising is playing out.

Despite how Tonko’s plan makes it seem, sportsbooks do not have total free reign in many markets. Barstool, for example, was fined in December 2022 for advertising its sportsbook on a college campus. At the same time, schools like LSU and Michigan State are sponsored by sportsbooks.

Across the pond, UK legislators are grappling with how to enforce sportsbook advertising regulations. Part of their plan seems to be to ban front-of-shirt gambling sponsors for teams in the English Premier League, although teams in other sports could still have gambling sponsors. The topic will be further discussed during an upcoming white paper on gambling reform.
