The gambling industry, like any other, has the potential to be sustainable, if it is managed and regulated properly. But what does ‘sustainability’ actually mean? Let’s first try to agree on its meaning before finding out whether it can indeed be sustainable.
Sustainability is not the same as corporate social responsibility or ESG (environmental social governance). In its simplest terms, sustainability is defined by ‘how’ a company operates and ‘why’. Does it operate by having a net positive or negative impact on the environment and society? Does it operate to serve interests that are beyond short-term profit or shareholders value at any cost?
A sustainable business will ensure that ‘success’ encompasses elements of environmental and social impact. A company cannot say it is sustainable because shareholders get value, while society pays a heavy cost for the benefit of a few shareholders.
Sustainability requires thinking large and honestly about three elements: What are the social, financial and environmental impacts of a company? What societal, and environmental issues could impact the company’s financial success? How does a company fit within environmental and societal thresholds? For example, we only have one planet, and therefore we have limits that companies should consider when operating from an environmental point of view.
The legalisation and regulation of gambling can play a significant role in the sustainability of the industry. In some countries, gambling is illegal or heavily restricted, which can lead to the growth of underground or unregulated gambling operations. These operations often lack the necessary safeguards and controls to protect consumers and prevent problem gambling, which can lead to negative consequences for both the industry and society.
On the other hand, countries that have legal and regulated gambling industries tend to have more safeguards in place to protect consumers and minimise negative impacts. These safeguards can include measures such as responsible gambling programmes, age restrictions, and strict regulations on advertising and marketing. But for these measures to work, we need to analyse their effectiveness from an impact point of view.
Another factor that can impact the sustainability of the gambling industry is the level of competition within the market. A highly competitive market can lead to lower profit margins and pressure on operators to cut corners or engage in unethical practices to stay competitive. This can lead to a decrease in the quality of services and products offered, and potentially negative impacts on consumers. On the other hand, a market with less competition may allow operators to have more control over pricing and profit margins, but it can also lead to stagnation and a lack of innovation.
The impact of technological advancements on the gambling industry is also a significant factor to consider. The rise of online and mobile gambling has allowed the industry to reach a wider audience and has increased the convenience and accessibility of gambling. However, it has also led to new challenges, such as the potential for increased problem gambling and the need for effective online regulation and security measures.
Societal attitudes towards gambling can also impact the sustainability of the industry. Does he consider himself immortalized among the Greats? Among Doyle and Hellmuth and Ungar? Perhaps not. But he knows his place in the industry. And he knows that right now, he shares a small portion of responsibility — a sliver, a morsel, a modicum of responsibility — for the place the WSOP has in poker, and perhaps for poker in general.
PokerNews caught up with the Norwegian to reminisce about his 2022 victory, talk about his place in the newly created WSOP Thrill Team commemorating the 10th anniversary of the WSOP App, and to talk about his plans for 2023.
Adjusting to Life as the Champ

Twelve months ago, Jorstad sat with less than $200,000 in live earnings. A sixth-place finish in the 2021 WSOP Online Main Event had already seen him accrue three times that much, but even in his wildest dreams Jorstad could not have predicted the double-bracelet winning summer he’d enjoy in 2022, nor the Main Event victory that netted him $10,000,000.

“The whole concept of Main Event champions being ‘immortalized‘ isn’t something I’ve spent a lot of time thinking about,” admits Jorstad. “But it’s still weird to me when I go to poker stops, or when I’m at the airport or in a restaurant, and someone comes up to me asking for a selfie. And I’m like, ‘Why would you want to take a selfie with me?’
“I just still see myself as the same guy. Nothing about me has changed! I’m not saying that as a bad thing, I don’t want to be someone else — I think I’m perfectly fine the way I am!”
Joining the Thrill Team
No other former Main Event champions were named in the seven-strong WSOP App Thrill Team, and Jorstad says that he was honored to have been chosen.
“After last summer, I guess you feel kind of connected to the WSOP brand immediately — I’m sure other players can relate to this. So when someone got in touch when they were arranging the lineup, it immediately sounded like a pretty good fit.
“The lineup is really sick, and there are a lot of legends in this team. There’s a good mix between old-school legends and new up-and-comers.”
The first legend’s name out of his lips? Fellow Scandinavian Patrik Antonius.

“He’s been a big idol of mine ever since I first got into poker,” admitted Jorstad. “By the time I had started playing, he was already crushing it, and he’s been at the top pretty much forever.
“Vanessa [Selbst] as well — another old-school legend. Back when I was getting into poker, I watched so much poker content — from WSOP to WPT or High Stakes Poker — basically all the big TV shows, and Vanessa was there, and so was Patrik! Now I’m on the same team as both of them, which is reallycool.”
Legends rub shoulders with champions in the Thrill Team, who in turn rub shoulders with modern-day crushers and up-and-comers in one of the most varied poker ambassador teams assembled.
“You have Sam Abernathy, who is super sweet, and Adam Hendrix is obviously a very skilled poker player who was competing for the Global Poker Index [GPI] number one spot.
“Landon [Tice] and Ethan [Yau] I know quite well now having spent a lot of time with them during the summer. Landon is very hungry and seems like one to watch for the future, especially if he keeps going like he is now. I can see him being a regular on the high stakes scene in no time.
“And Ethan — everyone knows him as Rampage — he’s just one of the biggest poker creators that we have on the scene. Huge vlog, huge social media presence, and away from that he’s also on a bit of a heater.”

“My headspace has been very low, and I feel like my poker game hasn’t improved as much over the last six months as I would have liked it to. I feel like I’ve improved a lot over the last two or three years, but in the last six months, I just simply haven’t had the headspace to keep on that steady grind as hard as I was doing before.

“I think it’s gonna be an interesting ride this summer at the WSOP. I’m curious how it is going to be. Last year there were a few issues with long waiting lines and stuff like that, but that’s very hard to get around when you have big fields. I spoke to some of the WSOP guys about a month ago, and they already had plans in mind for how they’re going to improve that, so I think it’s going to be an improved experience and probably a bigger number than last year.
“I’m planning to go for the whole World Series this summer. I’m going at the very beginning and leaving at the very end. I was recently looking over the WSOP schedule trying to map out how much money I’m going to need in Vegas this summer. You know, deciding if I want to play the $250,000 or the $100,000.
“I figured if I want to play all the big stuff I’m going to need like $700,000-$800,000 just for my buy-ins. So it will be a crazy summer if I want to play that full schedule — which would be cool! I just need to put in a lot of work to regain confidence until then.”

An Illinois sports bettor has called for regulators to investigate what he believes to be “predatory” betting practices by the FanDuel Sportsbook. He has won just one out of 44 bets while wagering $1 a day on pre-made single-game parlays (SGPs) via the operator.

Steve Brubaker is concerned enough with his findings to suggest further study. He took to Twitter on Thursday to announce the moment his 44th bet failed, leaving him with a record of one win to 43 losses:
Commenting on what his findings mean, Brubaker highlighted that FanDuel runs multiple SGP promos daily, with a preloaded $10 bet likely the most bet option. He believes this would earn the sportsbook “hundreds of millions of dollars.”
While stressing his observations are neither scientific nor definitive, Brubaker believes regulators should investigate the Flutter-owned sportsbook’s practices.
It starts with Howe
Brubaker started his experiment after reading a statement by FanDuel CEO Amy Howe. She confirmed that 40% of the New York City-based sportsbook’s handle came from its app homepage, where three-quarters of the page features SGPs.
FanDuel hit a 50% share of the US online sports betting market in the fourth quarter of 2022, with US revenue of the brand’s parent Flutter up 67% to $3.2bn.
Brubaker placed his first SGP on January 20, betting $1 on whatever pre-made parlay popped up when logging into the FanDuel app daily. He went on a 26-day losing streak before his only win. While Brubaker’s sample size is small, according to PlayIllinois, he stressed that his findings are concerning, stating:
I think these things may be predatory.”
“If they’re really designed to [rarely] hit by the licensee then somebody should want to stop them from doing that,” he added. Brubaker believes regulators should study parlays and SGPs created by bettors and hold them up to single-game parlays created by FanDuel to see if there is a significant disparity in win-loss.
Unfair and manipulative
Brubaker suggests in FanDuel’s case that the SGPs are crafted in a way that is unfair to bettors. The bettor believes that if regulators find that sportsbooks “have the thumb on the scale” they should ban them from offering the product.
He also has concerns that FanDuel tries to hook customers to bet their pre-made SGPs by showing how many people have placed a bet via a flame graphic. His claims that even though elements of the bets often change, the online counter showing how many people placed the wager does not reset as it should.
PlayIllinois reports FanDuel has yet to respond to a request for a comment.

As usual, at the start of the year, the newly opened legislative session in Georgia was expected to witness new attempts to legalize sports betting in the state, in spite of the ongoing opposition of anti-gambling groups. Accordingly, in mid-February, Senate Bill 57 was brought up for discussion by Sen. Billy Hickman.
As anticipated by opposing parties and to the disappointment of its supporters, Bill 57 was defeated in the Senate.
37 “No” Votes VS 18 “Yes” Votes
As Associated Press informs, the Bill received 37 “no” votes and 19 “yes” votes. Senators who disapproved of the legalization of gambling were accompanied by lawmakers who consider legalizing sports betting would require a constitutional amendment.
Now, lawmakers have until the clock strikes midnight on Sunday and a new week begins to rethink the matter.
If it would have been given the green light, Hickman’s bill would have asked the state lottery to start offering sports betting and horse race wagering options, with the winnings at the track being paid by either the horse racing track itself or a different company, and not from the betting pool.
Also, the same bill would have seen the proceeds reach college scholarships and prekindergarten, which are two of the programs mandated by the Constitution that the Georgia state lottery is already actively supporting.
An Ongoing Battle
At the same time, a different bill that would legalize betting on sports betting while excluding horse race wagering is also waiting for a decision in the Georgia House.
House Bill 380 was introduced by Rep. Marcus Wiedower in February, asking for the legalization of sports betting without any mentions of horse race wagering. A proposal to allow voters to decide for themselves with the help of a referendum could also receive a favorable vote in the Senate.
In the meanwhile, the Peach State’s Constitution continues to ban pari-mutuel betting and casinos. This, however, is not stopping various forms of unregulated sports betting to take place with the help of underground sportsbooks.
According to Sen. Brandon Beach, this issue is “more harmful to people”, which is why there is a growing sense of inevitability regarding the state ultimately deciding to embrace sports betting one way or the other.
Plus, the state could benefit from a new source of revenue from gambling which is already a current occurrence in its illegal form. The pressure is even greater in the context of sports betting being made legal in 34 US states.
The Constitutional Amendment, a Complicated Matter
A constitutional amendment would require a majority consisting of two-thirds of voters counted in both of the General Assembly’s chambers. It would also ask for approval by a majority of voters that would need to be obtained throughout the state.
Since Republicans do not have a two-thirds majority in the two legislative chambers and in the context of several party members refusing to support gambling because of their moral beliefs, a standard sports betting bill would be the ideal solution.
These bills only require a simple majority of votes from both chambers along with the signature of Republican Gov. Brian Kemp. The latter has already expressed his will to see sports betting become legal in Georgia.
